Should noobs self-host?

Hi everyone,
I'm a COMPLETE noob and I'd love to try to self-host. Even though it seems very scary I thought I'd give it a shot. I realize it's gonna take a lot of help from the community to reach my level and gradually help me reach the end. I don't expect it, but thought I'd ask anyway with nothing to lose and huge appreciation for literally ANY help. (I'm willing to learn from ZERO)

My use case:
I'd like to have my gallery self-hosted with best security/privacy/accessibility.
Be able to access it from my phone, or give anyone I want a link to view it/edit it.
Have a good backup system

I'd love to get an idea on the fixed/running costs too.

I currently only have my personal laptop MSI GP72 2QE Leopard Pro with a 500gb SSD and 1tb HDD. I'm dual booting Win10 LTSC IoT and Linux Mint (mainly only use the latter).

I found FUTO's guide to self-managed life and I thought it was going to be for people at my level but it really isn't, as basic as it is it's still for people above me and he takes a lot for granted.

I'm willing to learn and read and prepare anything. Hopefully to be able to self-host more and more of my services (especially home security cameras eventually)

Thank you so so much!
