ubuntu 24.04 with 3070 - rocket league doesn't run, just hangs

tried the proton experimental option and the wine GE latest
quite possibly something very silly / out-dated as I don't often launch games, but the system I believe is up-to-date...
tried rebooting, system update, disabling second monitor.
any help appreciated!!!
