How to disable cron/scheduling on a deployed worker

What is the proper way to deploy a worker that runs on a schedule but to have it never run?

The purpose of this would be, for example, a worker that has staging and production deploys but we only ever want the staging deploy to run when manually triggered.

My current solution of setting the cron to Feb 29 can not possibly be correct

If you want to manually trigger the Worker, the best method is to use a fetch trigger. Since you don't want it to run, why would you want it to use cron?

I think I just need to get my head wrapped around this. Is it as simple as? ...

adding the cron schedule to the production environment in the wrangler config
removing the scheduled run from the staging environment in the wrangler config
adding a fetch method that triggers the same function(s) as the scheduled method

... as a result production uses the scheduled handler, and staging or production can use the fetch handler but staging will no longer be cron triggered. Is that all correct?

To help understand the purpose, I get in this situation frequently because I work on something in staging for a while but it graduates to production and I do not want to hit third party data providers twice because of multiple crons (shared cache is not appropriate for other reasons) but I still need to test code on staging once in a while so I prefer to do it manually as needed in those cases.

this was the puzzle piece I was missing if anybody else comes across this:
"If the crons property is an empty array then all the Cron Triggers are removed."
