Cannot connect to docker-socket-proxy

I am able to connect to the proxy when using these environment variables:

DOCKER_HOSTNAMES=socket-proxy
DOCKER_PORTS=2375

but not:

DOCKER_HOSTNAMES=https://socket-proxy.example.com
DOCKER_PORTS=443

even though I am able to communicate with the docker API when using other containers (e.g., dozzle).
