THUMB_LOCATION not respected?

I'd like to set a custom THUMB_LOCATION to utilize faster load times from an SSD (I'd still like to keep the main media/upload path to my hdd).
I followed the docs (https://docs.immich.app/guides/custom-locations) but it seems THUMB_LOCATION isn't respected.
I searched through the repo and also didn't find any references to this env variable.
Is it possible to set a custom path for thubnails?
