Best way to get started with custom svgs / artwork?

Hey everyone
For context, I am a web developer of ~5 years with major focus in react / golang / C# / AWS experience up to this point (mostly through work and personal web projects)
I am building a product right now where I am quickly needing to iterate on creating svgs, up to this point I've only ever needed to use react icons for projects - https://react-icons.github.io/react-icons/ - included here as link (can't recommend the package enough for ease of use on all sorts of react related projects)
So far I've had very little to no success with AI tools to generate svgs that I can quickly style in different fills / colors / ideas (for free), and I have not had a ton of experience with generating custom artwork / using drawing tools like photoshop / gimp / affinity.
think of the type of svgs I need to generate as more like "icons" as they would potentially need to be representative of different companies.
I thought this would be a good forum to post a question and see if anyone had any recommendations as to where to start given my background etc.
