Field and button to create relationship without modal

I currently have a relationship manager on Categories for Eligibles, which is essentially a one-to-one pivot between Categories and Entries.
For creating an Eligible for this category, I require solely one field, Entry name. Thus it feels overkill and clunky to be opening a modal solely for that. Ideally I'd just have an option field to search for entries, and a button for "Add as eligible".
I assume I'd have to use a render hook to add a custom field to the table header, but... I'm sort of lost as to how to configure that, as well as how to add the button to create the relationship.
