Run game offline doesn't work

I'm trying to play drone racing league simulator and they recently shut down the servers for the game. when i try to run it, it still tries to connect to the server and doesn't let me in. the same thing happens when the run game offline option is enabled. but when i disable my wifi, the game does let me in without problems and i can then turn the wifi on again but that's just annoying and i thought that this option would resolve that. other players of this game are suggesting firewalling the game, which i will try, but still.
(firewall didn't work, but editing /etc/hosts to include 0.0.0.0 api.drlgame.com did work)
