Troubleshooting an old phone

I'm running the cloudflared + immich setup. Works great for me, my wife and my son. My parents are visiting and I'm trying to set them up as users. Same URL, same client headers. Verified and double verified. This always gives me an error on my mom's phone, stating that the server could not be reached.
However, as soon as i add a temporary Bypass policy on the application in cloudflared, the server can be accessed and she can log in just fine.
I am wondering if this is not so much an Immich issue, but instead just an issue with the underlying OS support for the headers - or some such?
iOS: 15.8.1 (iPhone 7, so she's reluctant to update - I know, I know... )
