Trash "Number of days" setting behaviour

Hi, I'm looking for clarification on the behaviour of the "Number of days" setting. I want to keep Trash enabled, but disable the auto-deletion after n days. The description and documentation for the setting doesn't say anything about this use case.
I was wondering if a setting of zero would have this effect, so I tried digging around in the code but wasn't able to find the logic that reads this setting. Can anyone confirm or deny this, and possibly point me to the code that's responsible for the cleanup?
