Can't get controller support for games, even when they support it.

Hey all, I am trying to use the Fallout London One Click mod and am trying to get controller support for fallout 4, but no matter what i try it does not work or accept any input.
Things i've tried:
Adding the game to Steam and trying to use the overlay.
Launching the game from Heroic.
Using Steams Proton Hotfix (using any kind of Proton crashes the game.)
Any help is greatly appreciated!
