Can't use Claude subscription (Pro) with OpenClaw - setup-token gives 401 authentication error
I'm trying to use my Claude subscription with OpenClaw on an Umbrel (headless Linux server). I've successfully:
Installed Claude Code CLI and authenticated via claude login (OAuth works, can use Claude Code)
Generated setup-token with claude setup-token both in the OpenClaw container AND on the Umbrel host via SSH - same 401 error with both tokens
Added the token to OpenClaw via openclaw models auth add → anthropic → setup-token
However, when OpenClaw tries to use the model, I get:
HTTP 401: authentication_error: Invalid bearer token
The token format is sk-ant-oat01-... (OAuth token from Claude Code).
Setup details:
OpenClaw 2026.2.3 running on Umbrel
Claude Code CLI 2.1.34 authenticated successfully on both host and container
Trying to use anthropic/claude-opus-4-5 model
Tested tokens from both OpenClaw container AND Umbrel host - both fail with 401
Questions:
Does OpenClaw actually support Claude subscription OAuth tokens, or does it require API workspace credits?
Is the setup-token method the correct way to use Claude Pro/Max subscriptions with OpenClaw?
The official docs mention claude-max-api-proxy - is that required for subscription usage, or should setup-token work directly?
Any guidance would be appreciated!
