WH40k Rogue Trader crashing at 41% of the initial loading screen

It's the Epic Games store version of Rogue Trader. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, verifying the install, running with several different versions of proton, experimenting with different launch options, always the same result: the game plays a couple intro splash videos then goes to a loading bar which slows to a crawl at 40% and then crashes to desktop at 41%. My Heroic launcher has had no problems with half a dozen other games. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
