Is there any way to install using dnf?

I've found that the biggest thing getting in my way of making things 'just work' is not being able to sude dnf install anything. Every time I try, I just get the prohibitive 'Fedora Atomic images utilize rpm-ostree instead' message. Is there a workaround to this? I've had a very difficult time installing anything that doesn't just come in a flatpak.
I know very little about Linux as a whole and have recently switched, so please be as basic as possible and assume I know nothing.
