The promotion match is confusing

For some reason whenever me and my friends get into a promotion match it sometimes makes no sense at all. There were multiple games where me and my friends played matches in Erangel and got into the top 10 or 8, it always says "failed" which I was annoyed off especially when the note stated that you must get into the top 12 in Erangel (or top 6 in Livik)
It still says failed whenever I get into a top 8 or 7, and only then it says complete when I get to a top 3 spot. So I'm confused, is the designated stand supposed to be top 5 or 3 in both Erangel and Livik? If so let me know or is it really just based on how good your damage or performance in your match is or something else.

Solution
It counts on individual ranking not team ranking. Like the number of players alive in match is your individual rank. If you are aiming for top 15 then you must stay alive until it shows there are 15 players alive in match.
