Sub agent errors
The ByteString error is a bug in OpenClaw's gateway. Here's what happens:
The Problem:
When a subagent finishes its task and tries to send the result back to you, OpenClaw converts the response to a format called "ByteString" (used for transmission).
ByteString only supports ASCII characters (values 0-255). But subagent responses often contain:
• Emojis (
= value 128512)
• Smart quotes (" = value 8220)
• Other Unicode characters
The Error Message:
Cannot convert argument to a ByteString because
the character at index 125 has a value of 9608
which is greater than 255.
What it means:
• Character 9608 = █ (block character, often from terminal output or formatting)
• The gateway crashes trying to send this back to you
• You never see the subagent's result
Why it's happening to you:
All three subagents completed their work (scanned X feeds, processed 10k-40k tokens), but their responses contained special characters that triggered this bug.
It's a known OpenClaw bug — reported on community forums but not yet fixed in the official release.
