Passing DART_TOKEN env var to OpenClaw container securely

Goal + expected behaviour: We want to use the dart-tools Python library (Dart().list_tasks()) inside our OpenClaw Docker container. The library requires DART_TOKEN env var to authenticate. We'd like to pass it via Docker Compose .env rather than storing it in openclaw.json.
What happened instead: The Dart integration docs recommend adding the token to openclaw.json "env" section, but we prefer not storing secrets in JSON config files. Standard Docker Compose environment variables (docker-compose.yml env section) don't seem to be picked up by the Python library inside the container.
What you ran / clicked:
python3 -c "from dart import Dart; d = Dart(); d.list_tasks()"
→ DartException: Not logged in, either run dart.login(token) or save the token into the DART_TOKEN environment variable.
Environment:
OpenClaw 2026.3.2 (Docker)
dart-tools 0.8.11 (pip)
Ubuntu 24.04 VPS
Relevant logs:
dart.exception.DartException: Not logged in
Question: What's the recommended secure way to make DART_TOKEN available inside the OpenClaw container? Can we pass it through Docker Compose environment variables, or is openclaw.json the only supported method?
