Cannot boot consistently to desktop after fresh install
question
Hello all!
I have a fresh install that is not booting consistently to desktop.
- In the majority of attempts, the system gets past Grub, boots into
ostree:0
ostree:0
, and then sits at
"Booting Bazzite (ostree:0)"
"Booting Bazzite (ostree:0)"
. It does not progress after several minutes. - In some attempts, it gets past the "Booting" message after a moment, then I am presented with a branded loading spinner with the Bazzite logo at the bottom. This does not progress after several minutes. - In one attempt, the BIOS determined that the VGA card was not supported by the UEFI driver(??), and it turned CSM on to compensate. I turned CSM back off. - In one attempt so far, I loaded entirely into the Gnome desktop(!), and was able to log in as expected. However, the cursor movement was very slow (<1 FPS), and the desktop froze after about 2min.
In all cases, I have needed to forcibly power down and up. Between several of these attempts, I have fully reinstalled Bazzite (why not?), with no significant change in behavior.
This is for a desktop machine. Hardware: - CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - GPU: Zotac RTX 3070 Ti Trinity OC - Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix X570-I on firmware version 5044
All hardware worked normally under Windows as of earlier today, with Secure Boot enabled. Before installing Bazzite, I also updated my BIOS to the version noted above.
I used bazzite-gnome-nvidia-open-stable-live-amd64 to install, as it seemed to be the correct match for my GPU. I needed to use the simple graphics mode, as the default mode failed to load to the live desktop.
This was a clean install on an NVMe drive. There was previously a Windows installation on the drive. I used the full-disk install mode and overwrote Windows.
I have Secure Boot and CSM/Legacy Boot turned off in the BIOS, per the instructions and FAQ.
Suggestions welcomed. Thank you for any help!
Solution
Okay! I am pleased to report that I am able to boot to desktop, and it feels like I'm getting hardware acceleration as I would expect. I'll do some more testing on it later today to confirm.
What changed?? On a hunch of paring down devices in my motherboard, I tried setting the PCIe version from "Auto" to "3". I presumed it was getting 4 from my video card. I vaguely recalled having issues with this years ago. After changing that, I got a clean boot the first time, followed by a clean reboot. So I think that might have been the issue.
Thank you all for the ideas and support along the way! Looking forward to finally spending more time with Bazzite in the coming days and weeks.
