Hello wonderful devs, we have a request for your consideration:

Summary: Add support for audio reactive brushes based on microphone/line input, rather than an audio source playing on the PC.

Why: we do a live show with a DJ and a VR artist using audio reactive brushes. Today we set the line input on the PC to ‘listen to this device. While this ‘works’ in that the brushes bounce, there is noticeable visual latency between what is heard and seen.

When using an audio source like an MP3 playing there is no lag and the brushes react in perfect time.

Details: We do a weekly Twitch stream using a 2 PC setup that sends the DJ audio and video feed to the VR PC and monitor the audio via OBS. This setup introduces a delay between the DJs video/audio feed and the final stream which matches up the sound and visuals. This delay isn’t possible for our live in-person shows.

Our weekly stream has grown in popularity and there is demand for more live in-person shows where the latency is more apparent.

We believe that if a microphone/line input could be detected as an audio source in Open Brush it would resolve the latency for our live performances and make them more enjoyable for audiences. It’s also possible there’s a better work around we haven’t discovered and we are open to trying alternative approaches to get rid of the audio latency when using ‘listen to this device’ in the Windows recording device properties.

We recognize this may be complex to enable (need to figure out how to allow the user to differentiate between audio inputs vs just the auto-detection of playing audio today).

We love Open Brush and are so grateful to this community for taking over after Tilt Brush which we started using back in 2016. We will continue to happily make our donations regardless if this feature ever makes it in. Your app has brought us and our viewers so much joy. We couldn’t do what we do without you! Thank you for reading and considering this, or offering suggestions.
