That is possible but not so likely in such a system. If you have lower than 8 gb ram then swap might kick in and it is no different than system freezing. Since this is Cinnamon i have another theory about freeze that i had on such a system. Games that runs above 60 fps were freezing my system. https://github.com/linuxmint/muffin/issues/607

So what you have to test is locking games to 60 fps/enabling vsync mitigates the issue or not Eventually moved to KDE and then Arch Linux because Mint guys were like "meh, doesn't happen for everyone so we don't care"

So the gap in cinnamon?

By gap you mean "fault/mistake" for me it was On the same Mint system switching to KDE eliminated the issue
I've tested with KDE Plasma on same system, using Kubuntu's KDE backports ppa. Everything runs fine there. So it is a Cinnamon/Muffin issue.
Test games with vsync/locked to your screen refresh rate If your system doesn't freeze when you do it, then it is the same issue If not, something else
