GOG - Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Gate (1998)
Game never launches although the map editor does. tried a few different versions of Proton without success. Both Steam and Heroic think the game is running until you click "Stop", but nothing ever appears.

Can you try running it with a Wine build instead of Proton?
You can download latest Wine GE 8 from Wine Manager of Heroic

Thanks for that. It now loads, but is a blank screen on the two intro videos before presenting a strange grey, minature version of the menu repeated 3 times in the top left corner. I've tried with and without fullscreen enabled.
It asked to install a .net package called mono? I accepted and installed that.

You likely need to use dgvoodo2 with that, appearently it is a ddraw game
Usage od dgvoodo2 is: Download it, place the dll you need next to game exe, go to winecfg and add an override as
native for the dll you've placed next to game exe ( override should be without .dll in the name )
Then install d3dcompiler47 to prefix via winetricks
