I gave up, I tried everything. But I have a solution: I basically installed Epic Games from Lutris and installed the game and it works correctly!!!!

I was just testing it, it's a weird case like Dishonored®: Death of the Outsider™, you have to install the Epic Games Launcher inside the game's prefix
no need to login or actually use the launcher for anything but looks like the game expects something from the original Epic Games Launcher folders/registry to exist
just download the EpicGames .msi installer from their site > go to the game settings > Run EXE in Prefix > select the .msi > finish the installation > run the game
now it doesn't close after pressing Play
I tested with Wine-GE-Proton8-4 (but I imagine it works with other wines too)

Apparently forcing the game into offline mode in heroic worked for someone else

I am in wine section. Selected version as "Wine - Wine-GE-Proton8-4". I am selecting the last option "Run EXE on Prefix". I select EpicInstaller-15.4.0.msi. Nothing happens

I gave it a try as well. Installed wine from discovery to try and open the .msi to install the epic game launcher and nothing happens when I open the msi to install it....
I skipped trying to install it and went to the Run EXE Prefix and selected the msi and tried to launch the game with no success.

I made some progress!
Like mentioned on proton db, the game works with Proton or wine versions between 6.3 and 7

Now unfortunately you can't install those versions with the wine manager in heroic, but you can install it with a program, specifically made for it.

Assuming heroic is installed with flatpack, you can install protonup-qt through flatpack, and then u can just select any wine version you want to be installed into the heroic thingie.
I have yet to try out the game itself with an older wine version, but yea that is how you can Install older wine versions.
Also to the heroic devs, I suggest adding this information in the readme or the documentation (the information on how to install older wine versions.). If you want to I could do a pr which adds this to the docs

I'm using Heroic flatpak on Mint on it works well for the latest (Wine-GE-Proton8-7) and Wine-GE-Proton7-43 versions
so maybe it's because it's Steam Deck?

The reason I think epic has to be installed is, that the game can connect to your epic games account, which mine needed to do...
so either saves, or DRM 😮

many games connect to the epic account and don't need epic games launcher installed, there's something specific for fallout new vegas and dishonored apart from that (probably some hardcoded file paths doing some checks for example)

you can also try winetricks to run an exe in the prefix, maybe it gives you more info
you can do winetricks > select default prefix > run explorer > look for the msi an install it

note that Heroic flatpak does not have permissions to access
~/Downloads/, so either give it permissions to access that folder, or simply move the .msi file to ~/Documents or ~/Desktop and run from thererare-sapphire•3y ago

no, I think it's just missunderstandings
so let me clarify the steps
- you install fallout new vegas
- click the
settings button https://discord.com/channels/812703221789097985/1111439828995809290/1111660041934753812
- click the Run EXE on Prefix button in the dialog that pops up
- a file picker should open, look for the Epic .msi installer
- after opening the msi, the installation steps for epic should show up, if if doesn't it's because you have the .msi in the wrong place where epic can't access, move it to the desktop, or documents or other folder that heroic can access (you can check with flatseal) and try again
- after the installation ends, press play now
if the game doesn't start, under the play now button there's a Report a problem running this game link, click that, it will take you to the logs, share that hereflat-fuchsia•3y ago

make sure heroic has access to whatever folder it's in, you can check that with Flatseal
also I tested with Wine-GE-proton, if you are using something else maybe that's it
