EBB42 Where Do I Begin?

Hello! I am working on finishing the wiring for my RatRig 500 and due to some of the wiring being way too short I started looking into some of my options. I found some folks talking about the BTT EBB42 as an option. I was wondering if there is someone that might be able to answer some questions regarding the board before I go down that path? Essentially, I am just trying to figure out which cables I need, if there is an installation guide available, what I will need to do when setting up the Octopus board, and if there are any things that I need to know before purchasing? If I need to print out some parts for the EVA setup, thats fine as well, I have other printers able to make the parts for the RR500. The goal, aside from getting the big machine up and running, would be to repeat this process for the other ratrigs that I have waiting to be assembled. I know other people, like me, have a lot of the same questions. I did search the discord before posting to see if I could find some answers and it was still a unclear. Before I go cutting cables short and buying more boards, I just want to be sure I have a solid grasp on what I will be doing.

Just to make sure I am reading everything correctly, It would just be Power and a USB-C running back to the Octopus or the Pi?

yes well, in case you have a 4028 Fan some additional cables the USB will be connected to the PI

Connecting a 4028 fan | RatOS
4028 server fans are becoming a popular option for part cooling because of their light weight and great pressure and flow rates. In this guide we'll go over how to connect one and use it for part cooling. 4-pin fans usually aren't used in 3d printers, and many boards only provide 2-pin ports, but fear not! There's always a way.

I have built a bunch of printers before and run a small farm so I don't mind getting technical.

i would connect the delta completely to the mainboard not the toolboard

Alrighty. Thats not too bad to run. Just to cover my bases, there is no CAN Bus needed for the EBB42 since I am running an Octopus board, right?
Helge Keck

use only USB and the power cables, no CAN

Awesome. Just to wrap up the questions.... Is it better to use the molex or to wire directly to the board? I was planning to use 16 AWG for the power so that anything that needs power will have plenty of power

i dont have a opinion both works

Last thing, there haven't been issues with the power and data lines being run together, have there? Im used to that being an issue with much larger power runs but I try to keep it in mind when doing smaller stuff

usb is shielded, no worries

also, only AC voltage is bad, the power to the toolboard is DC no big deal

Yeah. Its just a habbit to verify as much as I can.

I think that is everything for the time being. Thank you very much for all of your help! I really appreciate it! Oh, dumb question @Helge Keck. Since I am running power for the hot end to the EBB42, do I need to run power for the hot end to the Octopus board?
Helge Keck
Helge Keck13mo ago
the EBB has a own hotend connector all power comes through the 2 cables no extra cable needed
rare-sapphire
rare-sapphire13mo ago
Right. I just meant the power that would run from the PSU to the Octopus board: Hot End slot, is no longer needed, correct?
Helge Keck
Helge Keck13mo ago
jsut conenct all cables to the octopus, do not change anything

Part of the reason I was asking that is because I am out of slots on the PSU if I do that, so I either have to double up or grab another 24v psu. I can break out one of the power lines since I am using DIN rails.

wagos for a clean power distribution i highly recommedn to use them

Thats what I am using. Trying to do this giant machine as my test bed and learning for when I set up the next 4 machines.

Hey all! I'm using the delta fan, @Helge Keck you stated that you need extra cables then. Do you mean that I should power the fan from the main control board since the EBB only has 24v out?

Also, the thermistor selector switces are missing on my board. I've ordered the board through the Ratrig site, is this done purposefully?
