trench coat without looking like a school shooter?

Is it possible to pull off a dark trench coat without looking like a school shooter, Matrix cosplayer or a tips fedora neckbeard? Or is this inherent to the garment? I would wear it exclusively with preppy or tailored clothes. Would it be advised to take one with or without the belt? And are there other brands with classic designs to look at than Burberry's? I've seen some nice vintage ones by Saint Laurent.

this is something i'd avoid unless you really know exactly what you're doing

pretty easy to pull off if you get one in a woolen fabric. i personally would avoid black nylon, though in general i dont think long coats overtly give off "school shooter vibes" nowadays

provided ofc you dont extremely dress it down (i.e. nothing but a t-shirt and jeans underneath)

I already have a woolen overcoat and somehow that gives me less fedora vibes. I'm looking for something for less cold weather and wouldn't take something nylon but would go for cotton.

If you’re going for preppy or tailored clothing and its more traditional, try a navy trench with a belt or navy mac

^ Navy looks better and is easier to style than black imo, as far as dark coats go
