Self-host or aternos?

would it be better to self-host a mc server (1.16.5 paper) on a machine with:

4 gb ram
intel hd 620 (dont think this matters too much)
intel i3 8145u

or to create a server via aternos (2.6 gb of ram, no video card)?

if i self-host its going to be on windows 10 bcs i hate linux

you're not giving it a lot of memory to work with, but I guess it'd work for a couple players. your mileage may vary depending on what you're doing.

You'd have to leave some leftover memory for the OS (and Windows isn't thin & light), so you'd maybe be able to allocate 2GB.. which is not a lot at all.

basically if you're running very recent versions (1.20.x) then you're just gonna have a bad time.

older versions will help things out a bit, but using Forge is also going to add more overhead.

I suggest to get that free server hosting from oracle.
You will have to enter some billing info but you wont get charged.
U can get like 20gb, but u will have to know how to work with linux.
Minecraft servers dont run well on windows cuz how much permance windows takes from your minecraft server
