Personal Style - Topic of the day 9/1/23

This is the place to talk about yourself. How would you describe your personal style? Are you happy with it? Or are there things you're looking to add/remove/change? In what direction do you see yourself taking your style in the future?

I have no fucking clue what my style is it’s so eclectic I wonder if anyone here thinks I have a coherent theme Raisin describes it best as SSense core But I want a lil c*nt built in

Banshees of Inisherin-core. I want a wardrobe full of casual tailoring that looks like it's been dragged through a hedge backwards worn over heartbreakingly beautiful local knitwear. Also fine tailoring that somehow doesn't make me a class traitor.

I guess mine would be like workwear/western/americana I think. Big fan of denim, carharrt work pants/jackets, flannel shirts etc. But joining here has been great because I see people in WAYWT particularly Digs & Art and see elements of their outfits that I think I can incorporate to things that I wear (camo and overalls at the moment mainly). There are lots of other people who are posting great outfits that are going to inspire pieces I add too. And I think there was a discussion about a week ago around knitwear so will definitely be incorporating a shetland jumper and cardigan for autumn/winter. Probably similar to J, some learning and experimenting as a newcomer especially around wearing clothes that I would have previously though were "too out there" but actually aren't at all.

My personal style is in a bit of a flux right now. I bit hard into the MFA heritage style thing of days old, but I really haven't been feeling that lately, and am actively trying to move away from it. Right now, things that I'm feeling are vintage ivy inspired stuff (https://i.imgur.com/Dd3BmE9.jpg), crunchy hiker vibes (https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1146934310180499456), and cute floral/plant embroidery, especially combined with some flowy drapey stuff (https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1136086526409838612). I'm not really sure how to marry these concepts together yet, or if that's even a good idea. I'm really feeling brands like Karu Research and Story mfg, but they're very expensive and hard to find secondhand. Very open to discussion/feedback about the direction I'm going!

I've spent a long time trying to figure what I like to wear vs just what I like to look at. Still very much a work in progress but I'm ending up somewhere city boy inspired, but more dark and minimal (basically comoli lol) and I'm slowly blundering my way towards having the wardrobe to back that up. Eventually I'd like to figure out how to work in some more avant-garde stuff, but small steps

Honestly at first thought exceedingly basic athleisure/Asian American Uniqlo starter pack. Been into sweaters those days. Haven't purchased all year but I dig camp collars because you can play around with patterns/colors very accessibly. Just liking wider fits in general w/ city boys as a major inspo. Soft/cozy vibes... Trying to find cohesion with my personality as someone who wants to become more flexible w/ my gender

I most heavily dress in workwear militaria styles but have been dipping my toe into ivy as well and meshing into my more workwear centric stuff. Vast majority of my wardrobe is vintage clothing which comes with its own aesthetic as well. I’m pretty satisfied with my current personal style but i’m always looking to expand into other avenues

Been so deep in the workwear/americana thing for so long that I became somewhat disillusioned with it. Lately I’ve been very into Ivy, militaria, gorpy stuff, westernwear, skate style, and a little bit of designer stuff.

A more serious answer is that I try to keep my California casualness in all my fits. I’m not used to layering because of the California desert so I stick to a simple tshirt, jeans and low profile shoes formula. A lot of my graphic shirts give off gift shops vibes too. Even when I try to dress up in a rugby polo or something in a similar vein I still try to keep a casual vibe going.

I just want to wear a comfy striped oxford and a nice watch tbh. Everything else is just to make that look better

I'm being pulled in clashing directions rn so my style is all over the place. Love vintage/milsurp clothes, but also flowy stuff like Ann and yohji. I haven't posted any flowy fits in WAWYT yet, but it has been a real and fun challenge mixing the two

I’ve moved from a the OG basic bastard to a very robust ivy look- oversized fits, cuffs, patina. Im very happy with how I dress and feel incredibly confident and comfortable with myself and my style. I think the most important thing I really learned about dress from my style is that nobody on those ivy campuses in take ivy gave a damn how they were dressed, they just wore what they had, and so didn’t obsess over if what they were wearing fit right or looked good. A number of people have said that ivy style isn’t so much what you wear as how you wear it and I fully believe that to be true. It’s given me a lot of confidence knowing that it’s almost impossible for me to “look bad” with ivy dress since because fundamentally it’s just a matter of mindset. Granted, that’s true of all fashion.

Some sort of Japanese influenced americana, with westernwear trying to creep in at the edges

I still wear mostly graphic tanks or tees with jeans or shorts, but I'm slowly clawing my way back to something a bit more elevated—I used to wear more jackets and ties but then I became a dad and started working in software and just wanted to let go for a bit. I'm aiming mostly for ivy (and dare I say 'academic') vibes with the current pieces I'm looking for, but I also want to balance that with some more rock-and-roll looks.

I largely follow the basic bastard received wisdom at the moment, but I’m slowly iterating outward. I’ve found I love a pop of color, I love tailoring, and love Ralph stuff. Within the BB, I have mostly only explored a Ivy/workwear styles, but as my ancestral homeland is the Rocky Mountains I’d like to make a return to my GORP-y roots.

I'm not sure I'm really able to put a more specific label on what I'm doing than "designer" right now. I focus a lot on silhouette and texture, and I like funny/weird details. I'm aiming for outfits that feel like a cohesive whole at all times, not like individual elements added together – which is also informing a lot of color decisions for me right now. I want colors to feel tonally adjacent to each other, and any contrast points I want to use as singular intentional focal points, kind of like a painting. I got no idea what to call this, but I also don't really need a name for it. I'm really happy with the direction I'm going in and I just hope to keep seeing where this leads me.

The word that I always think of when I see your fits is “sculptural”. Just like, lots of flowy natural curving lines and shapes. I really love seeing your pics in WAYWT

Ooh that's definitely a good summation of what I'm shooting for! Thank you 🥹 This is going to prop up my self esteem for a long time 😎

For the most part I've been living in the venn diagram of ivy/americana/workwear but lately I've been trending towards "ivy, but goofier." Been really interested in bending the rules of ivy-style as reflected in a lot of my recent waywts. I think I'll dip heavier back into workwear as the seasons change but for the summer I'm having a lot of fun playing around with the classic ivy look

When I was thinking about my style, I think I veered towards a lemaire/OL style but recently I basically follow “monkey see, monkey wear” I have a generally decent grasp of what looks good on me I think and I just experiment every now and then
