Are chinos or wool slacks better for business casual?
I'm starting a new job this Monday, which has a business casual dress code. I plan on wearing a navy blazer with a button-down and loafers, but I am unsure if I should wear poplin trousers or merino wool slacks. Would the slacks be overdressing?
Both pairs are navy, for what it's worth.

I think most people (here) would say that both blazer and bottoms being Navy, but not a matching set, would look odd in the uncanny-valley type of way where it's like, almost there but obviously not quite.
in the more abstract sense, if overdressing is your concern, i would definitely go with cotton chinos that don't have a crease pressed in.
in the sense of what my taste is, either would work, it's just going to be either more "slouchy" or "smart" respectively (and that's just what you feel that day)
yeah don't wear a navy blazer with navy pants it'll look like a failed suit
business casual is such a loosely defined dress code but you're probably fine either way, post pics in #outfit-feedback
Assuming the blazer is wool, wearing the wool trousers is likely to look as if you are wearing a mismatched suit. If there is sufficient contrast between the fabric of the blazer and the cotton trousers that might work. If you wore a light blue shirt the ensemble might be judged as intentional tonal dressing.
Colour aside, would wool slacks be overdressing?

Purely dependent on the workplace and something you get a feel for, imo. For example I work with more "technical" people who'll do polos and jeans, and if I come with a tie I don't feel like I overdressed, but in another office that's more normative, I might.
But in general, I find people don't really notice/care, especially in the office setting, so I'd say go for it if you like that look better

It really depends on how casual your business casual is, man. Both can work.
i dont think u overdrss. just dress the way that make u happy. people dont really care that much imo
If you're going with wool trousers, you'll want at least a grey color with a navy jacket
Yeah I have gathered as much haha.
Would intentional tonal dressing be bad?
No. But like anything else, if it's intentional and somewhat unusual it has to be done well
