Socks and underwear selection

Do I need to have only two types of garments, one for summer and one for winter? What kind of material, knitting method, thickness, etc. should I pay attention to when choosing? How much do I need? I am men.

Merino is fine for summer, it wicks sweat and doesn't smell. Base layers are thin undershirts and leggings, for example https://www.carhartt.com/c/base-layer . I would usually wear them on top of underwear.

Have tried a wide variety of boxer briefs, highly recommend Tommy john / CK Modal / or Lulu AIM. More expensive per-pair (~$10-15 on sale, tpyically $17-25, cheaper in packs). All are super comfortable for day-to-day (TJ can perform well for activity, they have an additional elastic portion on the thigh to prevent riding up), great at moisture wicking (lived in T E X A S) and durable (~4 years on TJ/AIM, !~3 on CK)
