Can't load timeline iPhone 12
Hello! This app is awesome I'm super excited to finally get away from Google photos. Server seems to be working great, and same with the Android app on my phone (pidel7). I only have about 500 assets though.
My wife's phone however (iPhone 12, iOS 16.6.1) with iOS app seems to be struggling. She has roughly 7k photos, and the timeline has been loading since yesterday. The photos are visible in the timeline, but theres always a loading icon at the bottom, and the albums don't load at all in the backup settings page. Just get a loading screen there when trying to select albums.
I enabled the finest logging and I notice theres constantly some logs, as long as the app is open. Does that mean it's working on these 7k photos? But when I leave the app it stops? It's been a few days of this so for sure it is too long. I imagine backing up those 7k items will take a while so I want to be able to get that started.
I will upload the latest log.
Any ideas?

the loading on the bottom means that the app is still calculating the hash of the files
on Android, that process is using native code so it is a lot faster than on iOS
But AFAIK, the timeline should show the photos/videos that have been calculating, please try to log out and log back in again
probably some state management bug

The has calculation which is longer on IOS, is it normal for it to take many hours?
depends on how many videos you have, but it should show the assets as soon as it get done calculated them
so if nothing showing up, it means bugs
Some of the assets are showing up indeed. I can't know if they're all there, but some are there.

album selection for backup yes, no albums load. So I can't start a backup. In the backup page, it doesnt list the number of assets. Only "--"
She is not using iCloud at all. I use PhotoSync now to backup her photos and videos, but want to move away from it and toward Immich! 🙂

Also, the log doesn't mention calculating hask at any point
You are looking FINE, which I don't normally use, Normal log level should be sufficient
I don't think we log hash calculation
Try reinstall the app, make sure to give the app access to all photos and videos
I uninstalled and reinstalled 2 days ago, and it has access to all photos and videos
Just been monitoring it the past 2 days, but everytime I open the app it looks the same
When you have access to her phone, can you try access that album selection page, if the albums don't load, return to the previous page and then access that page again?
I think I've tried that but I will do it exactly how you said. I'll also try logout and log back in.

We have some similar reports, I haven't experienced this bug personally
my phone model is iPhone 12 Pro
She has 12, not pro. Almost same, it is surprising. But I think they are a different chip actually
Quick update that I just noticed. In the backup page, even though I can't select any albums, I can turn on foreground and background backup and I have, they are both on.
I just noticed on the server that photos she took this morning were backed up. So the backup is running and working (even though no albums can be selected for backup), and new stuff gets backed up. All the old stuff is not backing up so far though.

My goal is to revamp the backup codebase after coming back from my vacation in October
so hopefully it will resolve these outstanding issues

I believe this is due to a different error https://github.com/immich-app/immich/issues/4117, not related to the album bug

Confirmed that this did not help, and neither did logging out and back in
but the pictures on the device are showing in the timeline. They can be uploaded individually by selecting and tapping upload button. I also already have all older items backed up, so I could add them to Immich from my computer and see how the app reacts when some of the pictures are on the server as well. Anyway I'll play with it.
The main issue is still that I cannot select the albums for backup.
FYI, this has been fixed for me in 1.80.0. iPhone 12 on same version app is now loading both the timeline and the backup albums selection, and backing up is now under way. Thanks a lot!!
That iPhone has about 7k assets, which I had previously backed up to a server using another method. So when the app wasn't backing up, I uploaded all those assets into immich on a computer using the webapp. Now that the app is working properly for the first time, and backing up all those 7k assets, I'm interested to see how it will react, because they should all be duplicates.
