Using `Ref`s for Tap Counts: Is it Necessary or Unnecessary?

hi guys, on the topic of tap, wondering if i should be using 
Ref
s here for the counts (and 
Ref.update
 in the taps).. that would seem more idiomatic, but creates a bunch of extra code that seems unnecessary, in this instance. am i missing something here?
