Getting a suit coat that fits

I was wondering how far in the waist on a coat can be brought in. I've always had a barrel chest and have lost 100 pounds. Every suit coat I have ever tried is way too baggy in the waist. I don't really want to go MtM due to price and since I don't know where I'll be when I lose more weight. Currently i have a 51 inch chest but my waist is like 45 inches. Is it possible for a tailor to bring the waist in like 6 inches without destroying the look of the suit or do I need to but the bullet and spend more on MtM.

to answer your last question: no, you can't bring the waist in 6 inches. do you have any pictures of how coats fit you? and/or how you would like them to fit?

Nothing thats acurate. My guesstimate was 6 inches. Lowest I can go with my shoulders was a 50r otherwise nothing fits in the shoulders/chest and the lapels push way out. Im not looking for skin tight but I dont want em to make me look bigger than I am.

A suit jacket definitely shouldn't be tight

this is a pretty good quick demonstration of ideal fit

Having a 51" chest and 45" waist is a drop 6 which sounds...totally normal? Can you post a pic of a suit jacket that fits you well in the chest but is way too baggy in the waist?

So I tried on some haggard suits Kohls had available just to see what fit in the shoulders. 52 seemed too big on the shoulders and 50 barely fits em but looked better. I just tried some on to figure out what I would online order cause haggard was having a 50% off sale. This is the best picture i have for how the waist fits me on their 50r or 52rs

It just flares out at the bottom and folds. Ive ordered a short but im just trying to see if its crazy to think about before I even walk into a tailors 🤷‍♂️

This picture isn't very helpful for feedback, we need to see a full body pic with your arms resting naturally at your sides But yes that jacket definitely looks too long

Its not a good picture anyways but this was the 52r figured I need 50s cause the shoulders dont pucker from the slight overhang then. I already know its not a good fit

It's not awful. With a S rather than an R, your tailor can probably make it look good

Well thats the 52. The shoulders were slightly too big. I did their activewear one which is neopolitan(?) so no shoulderpads and honestly that looks best with my shoulders. But ya i ciuld just button that over my roommate and thats just way too much room but i get it. Generally that size probably has a larger gut than i do 😅

Part of it is also that mass market clothing grading goes askew as sizes increase. They’re also generally boxier, so it’s kinda 2-for-1 Def need to have the sleeves shortened, but the button could also be moved up, so I’d definitely go to a short. That would improve the drape & fit a little bit too.

This is wrong. The button should not be moved up at all. The bottom of the jacket is too long but the button is too high if anything (probably it’s hard to tell)

Mmm, my b, at second glance you’re right. Would be easier to tell if the front panel were to drape a little better. I think it would be worthwhile to go back and take pics with a different size or two. If the buttoning point is borderline high with a larger size, I’m unsure there’d be much improvement in that regard going down to a 50 or to a 52S

Best thing to do is go to an actual tailor about alterations and get their advice since they're doing the work.

For sure, sale returns are only 15 days from Hagar so if people with experience with a tailor know there's no possible way to bring it in as much as may be needed, I didn't want to waste time and be stuck with a coat that doesn't fit. The 50s isn't too bad at the waist but its the flare at the very bottom that's the worst part. and the lapels pull off the chest a little bit but no creasing. Ill take a pic of it in a second here. Sleeves need to go up about an inch and it still flairs from the waist to where it reaches my hips. Height wise I dont know if its good or not but the bottom button is right where my belly button is. I pulled some material behind my back to kinda show how im looking for it to actually fit and that doesmt make it too tight or anything but just to show yknow.

For the side view it shows how it just points out like if I had a beer belly. Pardon the angle change but its tricky to hold the phone for a side pic and not move the suit

I will say it looks like it pushes out more when my shoulders are in rest position but its just me at the moment to take pics

Tough to say. Can you take pics with the shirt you are going to wear and the pants? And use a self-timer/remote to take pics so you can stand relaxed?
