Path of Exile fails to launch, crashes with error message

First tried Wine-GE-735 since that was the version listed in Heroic (hadn't used it for a while). Then tried Wine-GE-822, which was the latest. That failed too, so I tried out Wine-GE-latest. Still crashed. There is a brief glimpse of the game launcher, as it checks for updates. When I ran it for the first time yesterday, it updated the game successfully, after downloading about 5 GB. However, the game itself fails to start. It gives the error message in the attached screenshot.

try running this game in dx11 mode if you can if it only supports vulkan then your GPU is too old and you would have to wait until NVK becomes good enough to use

How can I launch it with dx11 instead? Sorry if this is a stupid question 😊 The GPU is on the old side, as it's a GTX 770. Should also say that I was able to launch the game and play a little bit some months ago. But I don't know what has changed between now and then, either with the game or Heroic.

Okay, no problem. Figured it was some setting in Heroic. Cause I don't get to anything in the game itself. It just crashes after the brief "checks for update" glimpse. Pretty sure the game has dx11/dx12/vulkan. But if I need to select that in the game options, I can't get that far 😐

it looks like it does have a dx11 mode you would have to manually change it in the config file ~/Documents/My Games/Path of Exile production_Config.ini

Can't find a file like that for this game, only found one for Dragon's Dogma. But these are two log files inside the Path of Exile folder itself.

Looked around some more, and was finally able to find this file, and edited out "vulkan". The game then launched. However, it fairly soon crashed/became unresponsive, and my character stopped moving around. The end of the log file in Heroic states this: err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Failed to sync fence: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST err: DxvkDevice: waitForIdle: Operation failed err: DxvkSubmissionQueue: Command submission failed: VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST

drop the texture setting to the lowest one you are running out of vram and nvidia can't handle that apparently

Cheers. That enabled me to play a little bit, altho it lags like a mo-fo. A step in the right direction tho, it didn't crash 🙂

when does it lag? does it lag in new areas?

Yeah, pretty much everywhere atm, but it may be a temporary thing due to rebuilding shaders. FPS dropped to 2, or standstill tbh, when I joined an area with enemies. So I kinda gave up on that lol

might be a vram thing then

However, fps was only mid-30s just in the hideout, so I'm not too optimistic of it actually working out in maps with countless enemies everywhere. Maybe the PC is simply too outdated now, and the game has too much stuff going on since last I played on PC
