I'm leaning to yes and move away from github discussions, it's just way dead compared to how it should be and then we could put more "liquid" data there so we can get nick more help for getting stuff out of #bazzite on the web cc @nickname on this one and it's probably easier to publish the newsletters in there, and set them all as wiki's plus this discord forum feature doesn't appear to be working for us.

If it makes stuff easier to parse I'd say go for it. For me atleast I don't really like posting on github as i think of it as more 'dev' focused but thats just me.
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
yeah plus we need a cool async place to hang out and like, it'd be nicer to get screenshot threads going, etc.

Yeah, for a lot of people I think it would make more sense
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
ok I'm going to make one now. 😄 I am confident we'll get accepted anyway

I like the idea especially if it's formatted like a wiki it's invite only (tried loggin in with github account) although you probably are setting it up rn

I basically copied the raw markdown from the website repo and other than fixing the youtube url it worked perfectly if you wanna try doing #2 though if you could try github login again that would be useful
tryhardsoccermomswag
ok i can do that nah invite only error. i PM'd my email... this github was made as a throwaway so it's kind of weird lol
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
oh, I need to change the plan to make the site public, which means I need to contact support
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
but it says invite sent
tryhardsoccermomswag
take your time it's all good oh ok
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
oh check now!
tryhardsoccermomswag
i just made a discourse account lol but ok it logged me in so i guess it's good ok so im seeing how this works so just the buzzes? not the 1.0/2.0 announcements and documentation correct?
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
all of it eventually I think announcements should be a tag I think
tryhardsoccermomswag
it is
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
you have the permissions to create them on the fly
tryhardsoccermomswag
okay cool. im editing the bazzite category about right now
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
yeah it's all markdown so I am copying and pasting liberally I think this will long term instead of doing a faq by hand, you can just post one per thread and then the site will order the faq based on traffic/interest anyway
tryhardsoccermomswag
that's a pretty good idea because the current documentation is way too big lol
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
yeah it's becoming a huge page I'm going to go to bed, but I can help doing the faq tomorrow, and we can just all hit it up and get a ton done
tryhardsoccermomswag
good night!
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
oh when you backfill go oldest to newest so everything goes in order otherwise it'll be all confusing for new users then once we have all the major stuff in there at least we'll have a bunch of stuff in there
tryhardsoccermomswag
alright
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
ok their support is mostly around on monday so we'll have to wait
tryhardsoccermomswag
no problem i think this move is going to give us more visibility to our users than the current setup anyways https://github.com/ublue-os/website/pull/654/files i organized the FAQ doc by category so when it comes time to migrate the docs to the discourse to serve as a wiki, each category can be its own separate thread Basically they're in order by: - general - installation - installing and managing software - updates, rollbacks, and rebasing - steam deck image specific questions btw making these newsletter a wiki isnt going to allow anyone to edit them right?

looool idk why that didnt show up for me should be fixed should these announcements be under "documentation" or should i create a new tag? actually docs sounds right wait nvm it prob should be under a new tag called announcements
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
yep
tryhardsoccermomswag
hey is discourse going to public? or do you have to make an account/login even to view the forum/docs? i know currently it's invite-only because we have to wait on support monday and are setting it up
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
we have to wait until monday to both make it open and let people join tldr I chose the wrong plan, we're on the private small business plan, not the open forum one but they got a hold of me, we just gotta wait one more day on the plus side, we'll have lots of content
tryhardsoccermomswag
okay no problem! i get it now. i didnt want to link stuff on the bazzite github readme and require anyone to sign in but now that it's not like that at all, then it's all good
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
yeah it'll be fully open and probably when we move a bunch of stuff off the site we can just have the forum as a tab on the top
tryhardsoccermomswag
After Monday I'm going to edit the README for Bazzite to link to the new Discourse wiki to replace the website links for installation and docs. I also might be thinking of replacing the Bazzite Portal website link with either the documentation or just the general category in the forum excited for tomorrow 😄 about to go to bed but the discourse documentation should be all ready for the migration to discourse tomorrow
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
ok they responded, it takes 1-3 days for the oss program to accept our application.
tryhardsoccermomswag
i guess ill double check everything then lol
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
who knows maybe we're in the front of the line (or the back lol)
tryhardsoccermomswag
the bazzite documentation, newsletters, and feedback forum are all migrated properly from the website, and im pretty sure all of the links should now link to the discourse docs instead of the website could be 2 more days before it's open to the public, but at least i feel like it's in good shape i also am going to make changes to bazzite's README to link to the new docs with these reminders, yes ik im basically using a markdown tool for reminders for later instead of forking it but this works for me because ill remember this https://hackmd.io/C-_b6Ve6QDaxho7asTKUvA

Got ya 🙂 Project moves too fast? That's a bad thing? By the way, really appreciate this. Will be sure to give it all a good look Ideally, we'd have Bazzite images and Deck images and be able to take care of all hardware compatibility there but that's a challenge. Kernel Fsync may solve that

tryhardsoccermomswag
in the bazzite portal, should i have the button say "Forums" and link the Discourse Bazzite category like it is now or should i change it to "Documentation" and link the documentation on Discourse?
EyeCantCU
EyeCantCU7mo ago
Why not both?
tryhardsoccermomswag
yeah i can do both, but it does require the user to scroll at a lower resolution like 1280x800 😄 small thing i know, maybe both will be fine
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
I'd just do it like "Bazzite Community" as one link and once they get to the bazzite section it'll be fine I ran into this yesterday when updating bluefin docs, I just kinda consolidated it all under "community"
tryhardsoccermomswag
oh boy i might have to revert that commit later when im back home
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
which one
tryhardsoccermomswag
My recent one for bazzite. I added documentation above forums
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
ok so you want me to mark it as draft?
tryhardsoccermomswag
nah not that one it's already merged in bazzite's repo heh just realized someting so yeah the documentation button takes up enough space where the user has to scroll a tiny bit more to see the full "reboot now" button, but i also realized if you don't install a web browser in the portal, then it can't open those links until the system reboots anyways because flatpak firefox doesnt install until the 2nd boot as part of the flatpak manager that preinstalls the appropriate flatpaks
1/4 Life
1/4 Life7mo ago
Should install first on first boot So long as there's internet Temporary problem anyway since flatpak in the installer is being worked on
tryhardsoccermomswag
i was trying this on the VM, but i also went thru the bazzite portal by checking 0 things ok np should i still keep documentation or just have 1 button point to discourse? eh ill just keep it as is i guess
EyeCantCU
EyeCantCU7mo ago
It just takes a bit. Should work first boot (at least it does for me)
1/4 Life
1/4 Life7mo ago
The fact that it worked for you on second reboot is a great thing though, it needs the failover actually works great And it will indeed keep retrying until it can complete
tryhardsoccermomswag
yeah i opened a VM quickly on my laptop (bluefin btw) and did a speedrun of the portal to see the last page didnt install anything, so it was just next-->next-->next-->last page def didnt give it time to do that
EyeCantCU
EyeCantCU7mo ago
It's a shame we can't just have Flatpak Firefox be there without monstrous image sizes If it isn't already, should definitely go at the top of the install list so it gets taken care of first
tryhardsoccermomswag
it's at the top
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
yeah the minute we can get that flatpak feature it's in lol
tryhardsoccermomswag
exciting stuff last thing: i PR'd to add a notice to the old documentation that we're moving to discourse. i probably should have forked the website repo and only made 1 PR, but i ended up doing it kind of sloppy with each document (sorry.) i know these old docs will be removed soon, but for now users should be aware it's moving if they find themselves there from the latest release's description. docs should be in a good spot overall over there.
j0rge
j0rge7mo ago
it's all good, I'll take a look when I can
tryhardsoccermomswag

tryhardsoccermomswag
not a big deal but kyle you linked the website for the FAQ and installation as opposed to the Discourse documentation 😅. i was going to remove the website documentation since it's a mess in comparison to the new ones on Discourse. i know this project demands a lot of maintenance and support, and we have a lot of people using the bazzite images, so i understand completely so dont worry about it

yeah so I'm thinking, trickle status reports more often and be more agile, that'll get more people engaged that way we don't need to feel the pressure about doing a huge roll up every few weeks tldr, just translate the github commits for users, and they'll end up asking more questions and that's better engagement overall

i've been thinking about adding other popular images as a Discourse category, especially if the maintainers are already active in this discord. I know anyone can make their own custom image and I'm not sure what qualifies as "official" enough to become its own Discourse category like the "main/nvidia" images, Bazzite, Bluefin, and ucore.
for example, the secureblue image has documentation already for pre-installing it on the github page: https://github.com/secureblue/secureblue/blob/live/PREINSTALL-README.md Obviously, if everyone who is fine with this, it is also up to the RoyalOughtness if they would like their documentation on Discourse as well. I never spoke to them about this beforehand. I feel like the goal, while a personal image for the user of course, is also specialized enough to have its own dedicated category. i also always come back to this list - https://github.com/ublue-os/awesome-custom-images i have been thinking of linking this somewhere on the general discourse forum to try and get more eyes on it too

either tonight or the next day i will link the documentation on the Bazzite README to include other important documentation (updates/rollbacks/rebasing, installing and managing applications, etc.), and i would like to move where the newsletter link is located there too if that is fine
j0rge
j0rge6mo ago
I think we shouldn't do that. Like, part of our goal is to make sure people can source what they get, I don't want to have to check on these things. So I lean more towards, let people talk about them, but it's not an official thing. That's the reason we don't have a section on the fedora forums. Keeping it layered so it's more clear what the relationship between the downstream and upstream are. But I think we should move the custom image list from github into the forum so people can see it and add their own, that would be really useful I thinik

yup i know how to use gnome disks way more than kde partition manager for auto-mounting drives! might not be done tonight because i want to focus on the buzz for tomorrow's update honestly i might not even both with NTFS... i know there's usecases for this and people dual boot and share drives, but there's a lot of new users coming from windows with their games on NTFS drives lots of issues

make big disclaimer with watermark on images NOT FOR GAME DISKS, USE BTRFS/EXT4
tryhardsoccermomswag
alright lol i guess that's fair

kinda wish there was a way to just align all the descriptions or hide all the optional args but look, list so small now compared to before 🤣

Thanks ill add this almost done with the buzz. a couple of goals i have for next week: - general guide on auto-mounting drives with the 2 desktop environment GUIs, systemd.mount, and editing fstab - documentation will include more images (but not too much) - documentation on how to reinstall windows lol talking about the other handhelds is hard when i dont own them lol

one caveat we got to learn today with the guis * do not set up automount, unmount then format a drive (it can confuse the gui), remove the automount first before formatting since i am currently weathering a storm and cant do much, i am currently looking at this and editing in some kde instructions while waiting for a friend there should be enough for you to use for the gnome-disk version there now 🙂 idk how we would properly word the fstab version though
tryhardsoccermomswag
alright i guess ill finally start doing this now thanks for this by the way, i didnt finish the gnome disks method yet. there's a lot to mounting disks that i never even thought about before reading your instructions. we'll get this done soon though!!

yeah you can mount without any options but but rather do sane defaults, the lines i put in for each filesystem is the same for each method (gnome-disk, kde partition manager, fstab. systemd) idk if gnome-disk automatically converts the extra options into the gui checkboxes, but i know kde partition manager does that

i will not recommend users to mount secondary drives in home tho
j0rge
j0rge5mo ago
why not?
tryhardsoccermomswag
i thought making a directory in /mnt/ was a better option because that's kind of a "standard" sort of and if their home was ever blown away they can accidentally take their drive with them too lol but on the other hand, /mnt requires the user to make a directory with permissions so maybe not

i would consider mounting drives into $HOME to be more for more advanced users (with some familiarity with linux, not people who just started lets say last week) due to what nick said and because they can accidentally run rm -rf on something by accident and the guide we are putting together is just a best practices to get familiar

https://gitlab.com/evlaV/jupiter-hw-support/-/blob/master/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/99-steamos-automount.rules?ref_type=heads found this, and im sure kyle and maybe others have seen this because it's part of the evlav project but interesting how this is how valve handles automounting drives
