Heroic nuked my entire games directory after running "Force Update if Available"
I ran said command on the game Stellaris, checking to see if there was an update. What followed is not what I expected to happen...
I thought Heroic was simply checking for a game update, but in the background it was trying to move Stellaris from its installation on my external drive, to my home drive. My home drive only has 12 GB of space remaining and Stellaris is just over 9 GB. The move caused my system to go into read only and forced me to repair it with a live USB. While mounted in a live USB, I removed the Stellaris directory from my home drive to reclaim the lost space.
Upon reboot, I found that all my installed games in Heroic were listed as "not available." I then checked my external drive to find out the entire games directory had been nuked, not just the individual game directories. I now have 300 GB of free space as reported with
df
since all those games are now gone.
This is absolutely disastrous and can't be the intended effect of forcing an update. My only option now is to reinstall all those games. Hopefully no corruption occurred on my home drive from the force to read only.
This was on Ubuntu 22.04 using the latest 2.10.0 version of Heroic.0 Replies
