(Mesh) Shader issues in Alan Wake 2
Hey everyone, i recently bought and installed alan wake 2 on my machine through heroic. After some tinkering i managed to start it and it runs butter smooth (highest settings, native 1440p, don't have an fps display but feels like 100+ with no noticable drops) on my system (see the beginning of the log file for specs).
However i have an issue with some shaders, mostly the textures for rocks and trees, they just look mushy and not right. I'll attach a "screenshot" (Sorry for the mobile photo of the display, i can't figure out where gamescope saves it's screenshots). I assume this is some issue with mesh shaders, but i'm no expert. I'd be very grateful though if somebody knows how to fix this.
Cheers
Edit: log is here

This was a radv driver bug this have been fixed in mesa main https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/25659
The fix will also be included in the hopefully soon to be released 23.3.0 stable driver

Ah alright, thx a lot for the info. I suspected something like this but wasn't sure if it might be related to my settings

You can disable mesh shaders temporarily if you want to try that with the environment variable
VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS
and the value VK_EXT_mesh_shader
Though note i don't think the game devs consider the non mesh shader path supported so i don't know how it will affect the gamedependent-tanOP•2y ago
I'll give it a shot thx. It's not that bad either way, it's just some textures that look weird when looking at them closely.

Hope the game runs well otherwise!
The FBI text is also missing on the jacket if i remember correctly hehe

Doesn't launch with the message:
Your GPU does not support all the recommended features. This might lead to poor performance, visual glitches or crashes. A GPU with the following additional features is recommended:
- Mesh Shader

Aw
Thought that worked. (don't have the game myself)

Oh well it did for a bit after clicking away the message. Until it crashed my desktop session 20 seconds later at least ^^

heh

It does, as mentioned runs like butter, no dropped frames, perfect performance on highest settings

Awesome
If all goes well (crosses fingers) then mesa 23.3.0 should release here Wednesday. Don't know how quickly Flatpak usually picks up a new release
dependent-tanOP•2y ago
Ah yep now that you mentioned it. Never noticed it since it was never there in the first place
exotic-emerald•2y ago
Oh you aren't running flatpak nvm
I read the log wrong
dependent-tanOP•2y ago
Yep, but arch is usually relatively quick in picking up the packages

It's like hearing a song text wrong for a year thinking this is fine and then suddenly realizing that isn't what they are singing

youcan use mesa-git
there are instructions on how to build that and only run it with alan wake
so you dont disturb your system
exotic-emerald•2y ago
I was gonna say i usually won't tell people to use git version unless they ask to. But then again they said they use Arch :frog_pregnant:

tbh just running a local build only for alan wake should be pretty safe

Ye
dependent-tanOP•2y ago
Ye i know, been (had to be) running mesa-git when i first got my new GPU since the latest arch driver didn't yet support 7000 series
like-gold•2y ago
you have to be using latest to fix mesh shader
dependent-tanOP•2y ago
Sounds interesting, might look into that tommorow, but as i said the issues aren't too bad

nod for me on arch, i dont have this problem with latest mesa
dependent-tanOP•2y ago
Wdym? With the latest mesa core package or with the git version of mesa?
like-gold•2y ago
local build off mesa's git repo
no weird mesh shader issues, its all been resolved in latest
