ep 1 works fine
quickest-silver•2y ago
this says that you might need vcrun2015, might be worth installing that through winetricks
also, you prefix is set to "default" might want to change that to the name of the game

oh, jeez, I hate it when heroic does not automatically name the games. this is the third time I have to manually fix it when it should have been done already by heroic. The next update needs to fix this things
Do I just type vcrun2015 somewhere or is this an option that i can click on?
do i have to type out the whole title?
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
quickest-silver•2y ago
oh, it's through winetricks, you open winetricks in the game's settings, select default prefix, install dll or component, then look for vcrun2015
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
The log above is the updated one that may already answers your questions
please take at look at it and let me know what else is needed
quickest-silver•2y ago
i didn't ask any questions, do you mean that you installed vcrun already?
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
you mean the prefix folder? heroic should do that already, we need more details to understand what's going on for you since nobody else reported that problem
there was a question here for you that I'm not sure if you answered https://discord.com/channels/812703221789097985/1175563728645787698/1175877075769503906
when you open the install dialog it should show you the prefix folder, is that incorrect before installation?
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
The Log is updated and shown above.
Does it not tell you about the prefixes ?
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
what I mean is: when you open the install dialog for a game, is the prefix shown there already wrong? because I can only see that the prefix is wrong in the log but I don't know if the problem starts before the installation or if it's caused by something else
also, if the prefix is wrong in the install dialog, is that wrong for all games from all stores?
I'm asking questions to try to understand the problem to fix it, I can't reproduce the problem myself
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I think I know what you’re asking: above it is suggested that I change default to the name of the game and run the vc run2105 program and I did those two things and the issue persists. I uploaded the log after that. Changing default to the name of the game was the only thing suggested regarding prefix. Vcrun2015 was the idea for wine tricks. @arieljuod
I Said it may answer your questions. I didn’t say that it does or will. And, the log should show that vcrun is installed. Did you took a look at that recent log first?
Does it say? I’m not tech savvy so I assume when logs are being asked that it answers questions, generally and that any new questions will be formulated after looking at them.
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
This was from yesterday but I did not think it would be necessary with the log posted above already—but here is more information that could answer any of your questions.

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
That citation provided was for an unsolvable game. The issue persists but for this game, I already implemented the recommended settings from this chat.
Just to prevent some confusion because it seems like there were some questions that I sense have already been answered but are asked again from this chat: I followed @RawToast suggestion at the top of the chat, issue persists, the log followed, issue persists. @arieljuod ask about what the prefix said before installing to which is what @RawToast already had some suggestions for me that I have implemented. The recent log uploaded and photos are what is the latest fixes provided by @RawToast. I’m ready to try new suggestions. It helpful to know where the suggestions are coming from so I understand if they are not a suggestion that has already been said and tried. I am not sure if an overview of what’s been done in the chat will be helpful for you all so that I’m not confused doing steps that were already provided, but just doing them again for the sake of someone else-- it is helpful if I know that repeating ideas will change something that did not happen before and to make clear what those results will be. It can make the game even more broken by if I am re-working the steps already tried again and again just to see "what will happen."
I have mentioned this before but heroic does automatically put default in the prefix rather than the name and we spoke about this before, this thing happening with games being “default” rather than named was dismissed as a concern— as was told to me by mods here that Heroic does not really behave this way. I think this is a recurring issue that should be looked at and fixed for an update.
This is not a question for me. This is a mods question for themselves to fix as devs. I’m just telling you my experience with the games I need help with that have their prefix with “default” rather than their names. I think it’s a valid question and should be examined as part of the heroic development roadmap.
unwilling-turquoise•2y ago
im confused on what the issue even is everything looks correct
robust-apricot•2y ago
Don’t check the box that says use wine defaults when installing a game
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Are you suggesting I do this or just saying this in general? I’m been told by other mods that wine works best with gog and Amazon games and to default to that.
Also, I looked at the steam DB and it looks like this game is unsupported for the steam deck. So, this is probably the issue.
And proton DB says something similar.
So, I think, this case is unsolvable for now until wine/proton/heroic can be updated to support this game. I noticed that for other games that I had, after an update from heroic or proton/wine, the games started to work straight out of the box when before it had trouble launching.
quickest-silver•2y ago
Using wine is correct, the box labeled Use Wine Defaults while installing is not correct
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
So, am I to use wine or... how do I move forward from here? i have the latest wine and proton downloaded for heroic.
quickest-silver•2y ago
Can you show another log of episode 2? Let's just double check stuff
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I have not done anything since the last log but I will send another one soon.
robust-apricot•2y ago
You still use wine. Do not use that checkbox
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Great. I'll keep this in mind. How do you deal with the install dialog box? @termdisc what do you click on or off or what have you?
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
I'm one of the devs and one of the mods. What I'm saying is that we want to get those things fixed, but you are the only user reporting this problem and I cannot reproduce the problem on my end. That's why I'm asking you questions about what happens when you try to install a game to get more information to help troubleshoot the problem and look for a fix.
What is the value of the prefix field in the installation dialog when you try to install a new game? can you share a screenshot? because I need more information to try to find the solution and nobody else is having the problem, so I can't ask anyone else
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I am going to have to start all over when the install process of this game to give you what you are asking because I already made changes to the prefix provided by suggestions from @RawToast . So, to reproduce the issue, I have to start all over (uninstall and re-install this game). We already seen this with Splinter cell, and Alan wake and other games that I been told to change the default to the name of the game.
quickest-silver•2y ago
No, you shouldn't need to reinstall, but maybe verify and repair?
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
no need to restart, just pick any game in your library and press the install button
and share a screenshot of that dialog, no need to be that same game, no need to actually install that other game
I just want to understand what the install dialog looks like for you, and what's the value heroic puts in the prefix field
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
It may not be all games but I am sure there be some outliers and I hope to see why this happens at all for me.
Also, is there a consensus here to verify and repair the batman game?
I don't want to go on "forks in the road" following different suggestions from mods and devs at the same time
for one issue
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
I'm not suggesting things, I was just asking about the prefix value, follow what rawtoast was suggesting
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
okay but he suggested verify and repair and I am asking if that is something the mods and devs agree that I should do.
if not, then I won't do that
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
it doesn't hurt to run that, it's a safe thing to try, not guaranteed to make the game work, but won't break anything
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Thank you for confirming
I'll try that at some point while doing what you have asked me to do
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I just realized that some of the games that I’ve installed and play will have a crossed out zero saying the game is un-installable. Hmm. Weird.
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
ok, what I'll say is unrelated to the conversations you are following with rawtoast, but for the issue where you get the prefix
.../default
, it's because you check the option Use default wine settings
, just don't use that option ever unless you want to use the default
prefix, otherwise don't use it, and then that issue will be fixedforeign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Okay. I am thinking that the easiest way for me to fixed that is to uninstall and re-install the game and not check that option this time around. Still I am not sure if that will fix the batman game since I realized that game is unsupported but maybe proton db is wrong
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
no need to reinstall to change the prefix
that won't fix the problem
if the game shows up as unsupported in proton db it might be that it just doesn't work
robust-apricot•2y ago
The Steam version works. The unsupported tag at one point required GE Proton
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
does this mean switch from wine to proton in this case?
for this game?
robust-apricot•2y ago
No
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
@arieljuod I uploaded a new log with your suggestions. How that’s? The game doesn’t launch at all now, it’s stuck on “playing game”.
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Now this log is new and this one contains @RawToast suggestion to install vcrun2015 in wine tricks. Game still doesn’t launch unlike before with wine default.
quickest-silver•2y ago
Let me install it and tinker
Is episode 1 still installed for you?
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
The game does not launch at all so I could not answer this for you
It's a complete game so all episodes are part of one game and are unlocked.
robust-apricot•2y ago
This one looks like the game install directory is the prefix directory
unwilling-turquoise•2y ago
There's something seriously wrong with your wine setup or something
I have never seen that dosatrrib error before
robust-apricot•2y ago
And a samba error
quickest-silver•2y ago
It launched right away for me
Steam deck, heroic, latest wine
Didn't even install vcrun2015
robust-apricot•2y ago
You should really change your default prefix folder to
/run/media/mmcblk0p1/gog/Prefixes
Or else you’ll collide with your game filesunwilling-turquoise•2y ago
Yeah that too
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
let me boot up my steam deck. give me a minute
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Okay. This is my initial install dialog box. I hit install, right? That’s it for this step?

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
@termdisc sorry termdisc. I want to learn so I have to start over to help me know where I went wrong in this process.
quickest-silver•2y ago
Add \Prefixes\ before the games name on the prefix line
As it is now, it will still collide with the game files
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
so, (gog/Add\Prefixes\ "name of game")...
ignore parentheis
quickest-silver•2y ago
gog\Prefixes\<gameName>
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
looks like I have to change that "/" into a "".
""
" \ "
dang. would not let me type that the first time.
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Like this?

quickest-silver•2y ago
Switch the \ to /
My bad
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
-_-
quickest-silver•2y ago
Otherwise, great
I'm human, my bad
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
wait, for both of them or just after gog?
quickest-silver•2y ago
Both of them, make them all consistently /
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Okay. Is this better?

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I also notice that some games get more than one folder? Is this normal?

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
@RawToast ?
quickest-silver•2y ago
So, kind of it's normal. Let's take Alone in the Dark as an example
Alone in the dark 1 is probably the game folder
Alone in the Dark is probably the prefix folder
Most of the time, prefix folders should go in the folder marked for Prefixes, not in the same folder as the games so that there is no chance of them overlapping
So, is it normal? No
Is it normal based on how you've set things up historically? Yes, but try not to do that anymore
This looks fine
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
How can I avoid doing this?
alright, installing now. I wish Heroic would do this automatically because this inital set up should be fixed and ready to go, rather than having to tinker
for those of us who are new to linux gaming and pc gaming in general,
quickest-silver•2y ago
All prefixes should point to the default prefix folder in your general game settings, if you post what that is, I can let you know if it's right or what to change
After that is set correctly, install as normal
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
So I have to double check with you all for each and every game before installing?
quickest-silver•2y ago
No, no
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I mean, heoric should account for this and fix it for us
quickest-silver•2y ago
Once it is set correctly in the general game settings you shouldn't have to change your prefix ever again
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
general game settings? Like the initial install dialog box?
quickest-silver•2y ago
No, heroic gives you enough rope to hang yourself if you aren't careful. That means that if you change a setting that you aren't completely familiar with it can break stuff.
No, in the settings menu under Game Settings
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
that does not sound user friendly
especially for newbies
quickest-silver•2y ago
Users have a habit of being able to change everything they see and still have it work, but linux puts more dangerous things front and center, but that allows for more freedom and customization
It's got pros and cons
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I think the process that we just did should be like a big number 1 tip in the wiki or here on discord because I feel like I have to do what i just did for every game now
quickest-silver•2y ago
Again, you don't if you set up that setting properly
Share your game settings page in Settings
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I must have overlooked this piece of advice when i downloaded heroic
i cannot recall seeing this info
quickest-silver•2y ago
Most of the time it is set up properly and does not need to be changed. If you changed it, then it might not work 100% properly.
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Is this it?

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
wait
wrong pics
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Okay. Is this what you mean?
quickest-silver•2y ago
When you go to install games from here on out, do not touch the prefix line ever. It's set properly.
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Was it before because we have to do the process we just did?
quickest-silver•2y ago
I can read from your logs that you for sure touch the prefix line before installing, you don't need to do that
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I don't know what I did that automaticallty fixed it
quickest-silver•2y ago
This sentence doesn't make sense, can you clarify?
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
It is set properly but I did not do anything. So I am wondering how I got into having to fix the prefix for the batman game
did fixing the batman game now fixed the whole thing?
or.. what came first?
quickest-silver•2y ago
Because you altered it before installing the batman game
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
In the install dialog box but I don't think I ever went into general game settings and did anything there
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Why am I seeing the crossed out circles now?

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Those games are installed.
quickest-silver•2y ago
okay, let me be completely clear.
1. when you click the "Use Default Wine Settings" that overrides the correctly set setting and makes it go to the default\ directory
2. if you change the prefix line in any way on your own, you need to know that it can't go to the same folder as the game
3. if you do change it, make sure that it's not sharing a folder with another prefix
option 1 is bad because it makes all prefixes go to the same directory
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Okay. good to know. This should be a tip in the discord
is this also why I am seeing the crossed out circles and having two folders for some of my games?
quickest-silver•2y ago
maaaaybe? probably on the wiki, or we could add a pop-up that tells people to not make it the same as the install directory when they try
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I just know this is going to happen again with someone else
quickest-silver•2y ago
it happens kind of often
let me open an issue on gitlab
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Do you know why those crossed out circles are on some of the games in the photos?
use this in BOLD to help pass the info to new people
quickest-silver•2y ago
yes, because they aren't supported through the launcher or require anti-cheat that we can't provide
at least, that's what's typical
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
What? I just played those games
quickest-silver•2y ago
yeah, idk
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
one of them has a verified mark
quickest-silver•2y ago
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Is there a way to fix this the folders here to have them as one instead of them ?
Make it cleaner?
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
I def played this games and some of them are verified. It’s probably my SD card. The deck has been having issues reading it lately.

quickest-silver•2y ago
yeah, little nightmares for sure works, idk what's going on there
gonna have to wait for someone else to answer that
post your heroic log instead of the game log, maybe there's a clue in there
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
quickest-silver•2y ago
yeah, that should go to the
/run/media/mmcblk0p1/gog/Prefixes/Little Nightmaresbut that's the game log, post the heroic log
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
where is that?
quickest-silver•2y ago
let me be more clear
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
ugh, I knew it as soon as we got done with batman, I knew i had to do this process for a lot of other games
quickest-silver•2y ago
current prefix:
/run/media/mmcblk0p1/gog/Little Nightmaressuggested prefix:
/run/media/mmcblk0p1/gog/Prefixes/Little Nightmares
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
my bad, I mean where is the heroic log?
so i can upload it here
quickest-silver•2y ago
oh i see #:pushpin: Read Me First | Frequently Asked Questions the Heroic issue section says how to get that
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
oh. give me a minute
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
quickest-silver•2y ago
(01:15:54) WARNING: [Backend]: No clientId in goggame-1207659038.info file. Cannot resolve save path (01:15:54) WARNING: [Backend]: No clientId in goggame-1207658746.info file. Cannot resolve save pathseems to be more stuff related to the prefix since save files are contained within prefix directories for most gog games
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
If Heroic crashes or otherwise becomes unusable: Reproduce the issue, restart Heroic, navigate to the logs & click the "Last Log" button. Where is this button?

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Last log button?
Oh.
I kinda want to start all over and re install my games so to make it a clean slate
also, do people look at the debian posts?
quickest-silver•2y ago
huh. i guess that's not there anymore?
in what way? like posts from debian or posts from people who run debian?
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
like if I posts logs into debian, do people look at that
quickest-silver•2y ago
this is all fixable, going nuclear isn't really the route i would take if you have data limits
oh i see, the debian pastebin thing
yes, we do look at those
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Yeah. I use it to post logs because that is easier for me sometimes
do people look at that?
quickest-silver•2y ago
as long as you send us the link, we'll review logs on that site, it's a good way to share larger logs in some cases
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Okay the last log thing from the read me needs to be updated
quickest-silver•2y ago
i'm gonna sleep, put any more questions you have here, but please avoid pinging specific people for help, it's technically against our #rules
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
okay
i am going to do the batman process we did eariler for the other games to fix this issue
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Oh, some games came back on their own now. Dusk and dishonored

quickest-silver•2y ago
yeah, idk what that is about
have a good night, dude
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Have a good night RawToast
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
Do I have to do anything here or can I just install games like this as is?

foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
in general, you want to install the games as is without changing anything, the values we put by default are the safest we can be
only change things if you know why you are changing them
if you are not sure about changing something then you probably don't need to change it
foreign-sapphireOP•2y ago
okay.
