Outer Wilds (Epic) running without DLC

Just set up Heroic in my Steam Deck OLED to see if, in contrast to the Epic Games Launcher, it'll run Outer Wilds (from Epic) in Steam Deck Gaming Mode. It does, but lacks the Echoes of the Eye DLC (which I of course also own). On the very first launch, I did see the “Echoes of the Eye” subtitle on the main menu indicating it is there, but never since. This is true regardless of whether I run it in Desktop or Gaming Mode. Has anybody run into this too and has any idea how to get the DLC to show up? I don't think this is necessarily specific to the Steam Deck context.

maybe try re-installing the DLC? in the game page in heroic > click the 3 dots > DLCs, there you can uninstall > install it

Thank you, but no, it doesn't register as an actual DLC apparently (DLC menu shows no DLCs). Being new to Heroic, is this where you'd normally install DLCs or do they auto-install along with a game? The DLC also doesn't show up as an extra item in the games list from Epic inside Heroic, but Epic in the browser correctly shows the DLC as “in my library”.

DLCs should show up in the install modal when you install a game, and then in the DLCs option in the game page in heroic, they are not listed in the library

Okay. No, there weren't any options relating to the DLC upon installation (will reinstall now, though, just to be sure…) and the DLC menu item pop-up says “no DLCs found”.

looks like that game handles DLCs differently than what we can see

Yes, so it would seem. I think it's contained in the main installation and just unlocked by some means. I did find threads on Reddit with the same issue but, alas, no solution.

if you go to settings > logs > legendary/epic it should list all that we can see from your epic library, is the dlc listed there?

Hmm, currently says “no log file found”. Opening the library or Epic Store also doesn't result in a log showing. Is there anything else I can do to (re)generate that?

maybe you have logs disabled? check in settings > advanced > Disable Logs if you have logs disabled, enable them and then restart heroic or click the refresh library button in the library

Logs are not disabled and refreshing did nothing about the log. Currently reinstalling the game (and yes, there were no DLC options in the installation dialog), then I'll restart Heroic to see if that changes anything about the log. Alright, after restarting Heroic it shows the log. Outer Wilds itself is in there, no trace of Echoes of the Eye, but I guess it really is handled differently than regular DLC. (And reinstalling didn't fix the issue either.) Thank you anyway, appreciate the prompt replies! 😀 For the record, I also tried setting various SteamAppIds (from SteamDB, for the DLC and a bundle) as environment variable, but that didn't have any effect either.

It may be an Epic peculiarity, here's a post on Reddit with a comment instructing how to create a shortcut launching the game with DLC via the Epic Games Launcher (second comment): https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/1444hi2/epic_games_outer_wilds_as_nonsteam_game_with_dlc/ It uses a hexadecimal appendix after the game's code name (starfish) in the URL passed to Epic. Can this be replicated with Heroic?

I'm curious why you don't see the legendary/epic logs according to pcgamingwiki, you need the epic launcher for the DLC to show up https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Outer_Wilds, and legendary should make it look like it's using the real launcher you installed the game through Heroic's library or it's already installed and you used the Add Game feature? the only option to not have logs for epic would be that either you are not logged into epic inside heroic or logs are disabled, but logs are not disabled

I did see the logs after restarting Heroic. Not sure why they were missing in that one session. In the logs, the DLC isn't listed, but that may be normal as Outer Wilds seems to handle its DLC differently from other games. I installed the game directly via Heroic. So the way I understand this, getting the DLC requires going through Epic launcher, and I guess Heroic will be no help in that? Sucks because I tried directly via the Epic Games Launcher prior to Heroic and the game wouldn't launch in the Steam Deck's Gaming Mode with that (no matter the Proton version).

heroic should make the game think it's using the real launcher though, we use legendary https://github.com/derrod/legendary and it handles the DRM maybe you can report this issue in legendary's discord (there's a link to the discord there in the github repo)

That was helpful indeed: searching there led me to this: https://github.com/derrod/legendary/issues/426 Indeed, I had set the game to offline mode, turning that off has resulted in the DLC being there when run in Desktop Mode. Unfortunately, it now doesn't run in Gaming Mode any longer (showing the Steam throbber indefinitely). Sigh.

I don't know if this is an issue with my Epic account, or legendary, but it could be legendary, and hopefully someone here can at least help me figure it out. I have Outer Wilds installed with ...

After pressing some buttons, the process exits. Not sure where I might see a log of anything the game may have printed in terms of errors when doing that (in Gaming Mode). So… Turns out the shortcut in Steam was borked somehow, recreating that fixed it — it now works! 😀 Note to anybody else searching for this issue and stumbling upon this: Use the latest Proton (in my case, GE-Proton8-25), do not enable offline mode or Steam runtime. Thanks again, @arieljuod! 🙏
