Ruined Wool Sweater?

HI guys, I had a quick question - I accidentally washed my new merino sweater on high spin with a pair of jeans... there's tufts of fabric that's covered the entire sweater and it's a pretty thin sweater too. Is it safe to assume that the fabric's just shredded?

dark mode brightened it up a lot but I figured it would be best to show the fabric condition itself

I think let it dry and see. But usually for safety if u want to machine wash put them in a garment bag to avoid twisting

I've had good luck in reshaping wool knitwear by: soaking it cold for 10 mins or so. Squeeze the water out gently (don't wring it out). Lay flat on a towel. Gently reshape it with your hands (i.e. pull the sleeves flat, make sure it's all laying flat and straight). Squeeze as much water as you can put with the towel, then leave it flat to dry somewhere. Basically, water is fine for wool, heat is mostly fine, but water + heat makes the fibres all contract and pull together in sometimes inconsistent ways. But soaking in cold water should release them again. Just BE CAREFUL not to pull on it too much while it's wet as it will be weaker
