Games fail to launch due to "CRITICAL: Metadata for [ID] does not exist, cannot launch!"
I was attempting to run DNF Duel after installing it and coming up against a similar black screen that another experienced. I saw the web browser auth screen, and completed that. I was still facing a black screen, so I installed
vcrun2022
based on the Steam depots.
Upon attempting to launch the game again, I get [cli] CRITICAL: Metadata for "82cdbdf05c61474d89c4f9e8a8bf0ea4" does not exist, cannot launch!
as an error message. I had a similar error with Dying Light on my Deck where I couldn't even see the download file size or play a game after importing, but I could access Dying Light on my desktop. I tried moving the metadata file over, but it didn't change the behavior.
I have attempted to clear Heroic cache to no avail. I am about one step away from deleting the entire ~/.var/app/com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl
folder and reimporting games.
Searching the server yields only a handful of results without a resolution.30 Replies

after simply running the game again, it somehow works. strange
despite having attempted to run it 3 times previously

I have the same issue sometimes (specially with new games)
but every time I want to do some debugging, the games start working
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
it messes with you just enough
mere-teal•2y ago
so I can't really tell what's going on (I suspect something related to changing legendary's config folder, but I have no way to confirm that)
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
It's also inconsistent in terms of what games it happens to
the metadata file is still there and all that. it doesn't look broken on a cursory glance
mere-teal•2y ago
yeah, the metadata is in the right place, it's really strange
but so far it's just that for me, fails 1 or 2 times, then it works normally
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
Does it fail a couple times each time you attempt to play it between successes?
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
it only failed because of that error for a stretch of about 3 attempted runs, and it hasn't failed for that reason since
the game itself won't work, but that's a whole other issue
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
the game itself worked for me, i got through all the way to the tutorial with the cinematic playing and the page opening asking me to "allow" epic permissions
mere-teal•2y ago
it's not specific to this game, it's some issue with legendary not finding the metadata (not sure if heroic is messing up with that, or if legendary is failing there, maybe some caching?)
it happens to me almost every week when I try the free games
1-3 times of metadata not found, then everything works, no issues

as soon as you said cinematic, that inspired me to use "Prefer System Libraries." game works now hahah
gonna rebuild the prefix to see if vcrun2022 is even needed now
nope, not needed, just prefer sys libs
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
i didn't need to tick that
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
if I don't, I get a black screen after the first loading screen.
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
is this on deck or pc? i assume pc since your first log was pc
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
PC
I'm running Bazzite on both though
when enabled, I get the loading system data prompt

I'm using the flatpak, so it could just be a strange interaction
afraid-scarlet•2y ago
ah, could be!
mere-teal•2y ago
normal issue with flatpaks, not sure if we are missing something (older versions of Wine-GE like 8-13 seem to work fine)
cloudy-cyan•2y ago
hi‼️ Idiot here, where would i go to enable this?
cloudy-cyan•2y ago
The more I research I just… don’t seem to have the setting? Unless I’m in the wrong page, or I’m blind. Excuse the crude photo.

afraid-scarlet•2y ago
Is it under advanced?
cloudy-cyan•2y ago
Nope

Post your log

You’re using GE-Proton. You need to be using Wine-GE-latest. Get it from the Wine Manager in Heroic
cloudy-cyan•2y ago
Ayyyyyy ty very much, I’ll get to it

I just wanna say thank you, the black screen was driving me crazy. How did you figure "Prefer System Libraries" will fix it tho?
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
By stumbling on the right answer based on bad reasoning. Actually, it’s because there were similar situations where people had black screens before cinematic in other games.

Looks like the
CRITICAL: Metadata for [ID] does not exist, cannot launch!
error can be avoided checking the Ignore game update
setting
I suspect there's some connectivity issue, legendary fails to check if there's an update and shows that error (from what I can see in the code)
