Alan Wake 2 - RTX 4060, very low FPS
Hello, I bought a new card (Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060) just to play this game, and it's still unplayable because of a very low frame rate: it's around 10 FPS, even with low quality settings. I'm on Arch, using Wine Proton 8.25, with the following environment variables:
In the Graphics settings (in game), some options are disabled and their description say "This option requires an RTX card.", which I have (??).
Any hint why these options are disabled, and how to fix the perfs? Is a 4060 not enough??

Remove the vkd3d_config, it's enabled by default now
And yes it might not be enough due to vram, but I might be wrong on that

I disabled ray tracing and it's much better now 🤷♂️

dont enable raytracing on this game unless you have top end hardware.
without dlss its going to be bad
i'd also turn the post processing to the lowest setting
most other options will only impact fps a few frames, ime, so i just set everything else to high ..
the software raytracing this game employs is actually pretty good anyway (comparable to UE5's lumen), so disabling the hardware one should be pretty ok..

OK so you need at least a $700 worth graphics card to play this game as intended? not cool :/ anyway, thanks for the explanation and tips 🙂

No.. Works fine for me with last gen mid tier
If you want all the bells and whistles you do.. But the game looks amazing even at low settings.. Do note the graphics settings on console are lower than the low preset on pc...

Not as intended.
Do you really think the devs are expecting everyone to play on ultra?
Of course not. Ultra settings are there as the ideal way to play the game, not the only intended way.

yeah I thought my "as intended" would be taken like this. what I meant was: even with every setting on low, with a card supporting ray tracing, enabling it makes the game unplayable. I'm not saying I want to play on ultra quality with my 4060, I simply expected ray tracing to work with a card actually supporting it, on low/medium settings

Turn on dlss if you want raytracing
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
I cannot turn on DLSS for some reason. The options say "You need an RTX card", which I have, but it is disabled
yelping-magenta•2y ago
also the game always has a form of raytracing enabled
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
maybe DLSS is only supported in 4070 cards? I have no clue 🙂
yelping-magenta•2y ago
It should be. You need the dxvk nvapi stuff enabled.. If you are in wine-ge not proton
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
oh OK, thanks, I'll try that!
yelping-magenta•2y ago
Granted this doesnt work on my 3080 either
But supposidly if you have latest drivers thats the only needed option

I can't speak regarding Wine-GE on this. In the case of Proton, passing the environment variable
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1
is enough to get my 3070ti recognized for DLSS et cetera in any game I've tested; it may be worth giving a shot in your case.
I don't think Proton is officially supported by Heroic though, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Edit: Should have read the post. Ignore me; I see you've already tested with these set.yelping-magenta•2y ago
in this game for me at least, wine staging, ge, and proton and proton ge all did not show dlss options with their respective nvapi switch

Odd. I don't have Alan Wake so I can't provide much more help here then. I wish you good luck with the troubleshooting though.
yelping-magenta•2y ago
id agree though, the nvapi switch in wine-ge generally works in other thigns
control for example worked fine with the same settings that dont work on alan wake 2
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
I'll try playing with more settings regarding wine/proton/heroic and the game itself
thank you both for your help!
yelping-magenta•2y ago
fwiw game looks great without DLSS, but i wanted to flip the switch on ray tracing on the 3080 i got and see how that goes
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
so, I've checked the "auto install/update dxvk-nvapi" box in the heroic settings for the game, and I'm now able to enable DLSS!
thank you so much 🙂
ray tracing now works without tanking perfs
yelping-magenta•2y ago
nice
what config did you end up with?
deep-jadeOP•2y ago
with medium fps are a bit too low, so I set it on low and it's smooth most of the time 🙂

How’s that compared to on the steam deck?
yelping-magenta•2y ago
i mean steam deck you have to make a lot of sacrifices to make it work:
1) you have to counter intuitively give the GPU only 512MB of ram, which can only be done through bios, and it will impacct perf on other games.
2) you still have to run with settings all the way down, looks a little worse than console
3) thankfully the deck's smaller screen means lower resolutions dont really look that bad
4) at best you'll see 20ish fps
imo not the best place to play the game. personally id play elsewhere

pic is too dark but here it is on a steam deck

this was a while ago, so the mesh shader bug is likely fixed, so you could potentially see more detail in latest
