Can't get Pi to detect Octopus 1.1 - Stuck in first Configuration

I'm just starting my build. I'm in the RatOS Configuration but I don't get the option to flash directly from the Pi. The only option I get is to flash from SD card. I tried to flash from SD card. When I reboot the Octopus, the blue light turns on (recognizing the SD card) but the status light just flashes. When I pull the sd card, the .bin file has not been renamed to .cur and ratos configurator won't detect the octopus. I'm stumped! FAQ isn't helpful. Any thoughts?

for posterity: 1) you have to EXIT the configurator and update RatOS or DFU flashing isn't available 2) you really, really have to be sure you're using a data-capable USB cable. Sigh. [problem solved]
