How do I know if a leather jacket is worth restoring?

Back home for the holidays and took a look through my dad's closet. He's got a couple of old leather jackets. One of them has a nice fit but the leather looks super dry and pale. Also it's from a no name brand so I have no idea what the quality of the leather could be.

How do I know if it's worth it to restore the jacket or if the leather quality is trash?

After some searching I found a reddit post that says that "hunt club" is a jc penney in-house brand. So the quality is probably bad. Still, is it salvageable?

Doesn't cost you much to clean it off, apply VSC or similar, buff it, and see how you like it. Maybe even do two rounds.

Unless of course the jacket sucks so much the dye just runs off the leather, but what are you risking? It's not worth anything to anyone including you and your fam in current condition, not would it be worth much on ebay even in good condition. If you are motivated... why not?
