Supreme Commander (GOG) sound does not work.
Hello. So I have Supreme Commander on GOG and Steam. On Linux Mint 21.2, the sound works fine on Steam, but via Heroic (GOG) it does not work. I have tried installing GameScope, tried Steam Runtime, Proton Experimental. So far no dice. Strange that only the sound will not work. I figure it has to be something really small so if anyone has any ideas, please suggest. I am still scouring the internet.

I cannot find a game log for this, It is not anywhere in the game directory, however, if you know how to setup a debug log, I am open to suggestions

Try usine Wine-GE instead of Proton. It looks like you might not have drivers for Flatpak set up properly, though? Or maybe you just need to disable Gamemode? I'm not very familiar with how Heroic works in Flatpak.

I think game mod is only for anti-cheat, but I'm not 100% on that
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
removed Flatpak version, install DEB version
tried Wine-GE
still no sound

Log?

You don't have an nvidia gpu, so I think you need to turn off use dedicated graphics
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
Tried, did not help with sound
unwilling-turquoise•2y ago
Seems like one guy got it to work by downloading directx
https://forums.stardock.com/333009/solved-supreme-commander-sound-audio-problem
I'm not sure which one you'd need from winetricks
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
Thats not what this option does.. dedicated graphics is if you have multiple GPUs.
not nvidia hardware
unwilling-turquoise•2y ago
Why does it say nvidia prime in the logs?
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
that being said dxvk is smart enough to figure out which gpu iirc
thats just the option name when you click "dedicated gpu"
its related to nvidia prime, but its not the only configuration
out of curiosity, is the game just muted or not outputting to the right audio device? (check your sound settings in the os)
unwilling-turquoise•2y ago
Good to know
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
Game is not muted, shows outputting in Sound Settings --> Applications
I tried this in WineTricks. Did not work
unwilling-turquoise•2y ago
What exactly did you install?
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
d3dx9, d3dxp_43, d9vk, dxvk
tried also using PAUVControl, Turned off profile from HDA ATI HDMI, leaving only sound card as Output Device. nothing fixed. Sound works everywhere else, except this game
I would like to mention that while this is obviously not critical, I am really more surprised that this works in Steam but not Heroic. The files are basically the same, and both can use Proton, so I have to assume its some strange config issue or bug somewhere

I wonder: is it sound throughout the game, or in a video sequence? In the latter it could be a missing GStreamer codec.
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
Its the entire game, I tried getting into levels
no sound from intro, no sound from videos, no sound from mission briefings, no sound from gameplay
adverse-sapphire•2y ago
Weird.
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
saw this on lutris' installer
seems like a regression in newer wine that breaks audio
granted, wine 5.7 is ooooooooooooooold
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
lol, Heroic OLDEST wine options is 7-27
They don't even have an option for 6 or 5
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
you can try a 7 series wine and see if its working
also you can install your own versions and use those, heroic will see them
maybe you can try an earlier proton version too, seems that the steam version might just work with an old enough proton version
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
The Steam version works with new proton versions, including Proton Experimental, with sound
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
How well does Supreme Commander work on Linux and the Steam Deck?
Game information for Proton, Linux, Steam Deck, and SteamOS
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
nod, hence why i suggested proton
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
I will try earlier versions of Proton and Wine in the 7 series first
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
i only have this game on cd and i have no idea where it is ahah otherwise i'd try
exotic-emeraldOP•2y ago
Thanks, I am more committed to fixing this at this point as an emotional investment
Earlier versions of Wine and Proton did not fix it, going back to the 7 series. Still seeing if there is a way to download and try 5.7
found and downloaded proton 5.8, game failed to launch, now totally borked, wont start, ughh, I now have to figure this out
deleting everything (all changes I have made and tried) and reinstalling at least gets me back to square 1
unwilling-turquoise•2y ago
Deleting the prefix directory would accomplish the same thing
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
swaping prefixes all the time will lead to breakage if you dont clear the prefix folder
generally you dont have to reinstall the game.. the prefix is where all the customizations wine versions etc are set
the two should be separate (this is what heroic would do by default)

What I wouldnt give for a modern remaster of this game, and before anyone says it, I do NOT mean Planetary Annihilation. Supreme Commander had better story. Anyway, back to troubleshooting
foreign-sapphire•2y ago
granted i've worked with folks that worked on both
