Favorites Series: Overcoats - Topic of the day 2/3/24

What are your favorite overcoats? Favorite brands at low medium and high price points? What do you look for in an overcoat? What brands have been great for them and what brands have really let you down? (Note: the Favorites Series will be running ~weekly as a new way of doing the "Best X for $X" threads from a few years ago on MFA.)

I really like the grandad coat, no surprise, particularly how the lapels kind of cascade down when open in some of the photos of the posters here.

At the low price point, secondhand. Overcoats are an ideal item to get secondhand given they are easier to find in great condition than other items, not especially in demand as vintage items go (looking at you vintage Carhartt jackets), and new ones cost a lot (I mean I imagine they cost a lot to make too) making the price difference between new and vintage very high. In terms of what I look for, number one thing is that it at least reaches the knees and is roomy enough to layer. Personally thinking one with raglan sleeves (more casual than overcoats with structured shoulders generally) would be a nice starting point as I look for one in my size secondhand

I'm a big fan of my overcoat from Doppiaa. For inexpensive options secondhand is absolutely the way, the PTO suit filter works great for overcoats too, but Polo and Brooks Brothers are good additions too

Doppiaa coat totally fucks. Other current favorite overcoats: De Bonne Facture Grandad Ikiji Robe Coat Auralee Alpaca Trench Wythe Polo Coat taillour balmacaan Beams Plus balmacaan Document belted balmacaan Lemaire Wrap Coat Kaptain Sunshine Traveller Frizmworks balmacaan MotivMFG Swiss Army As noted above, a new overcoat can be very expensive. Looking secondhand can be a good way to find one on a budget. In addition to the PTO suit filter or PRL and Brooks I suggest looking at milsurp as well.

Do you find the robe coat hard to wear out? I've been considering a similar one, but I don't want people to think I'm wearing a bathrobe.

I’ve had people comment “that looks like a bathrobe” but it’s supposed to look like a robe, that’s the whole point I will say that it’s pretty damn warm so I don’t wear it out unless it’s real chilly.

been wearing mine with a big safety pin to fasten it and it rocks. upsett1's fits are perfect with it too -- always dressing it down. It's not an "overcoat" in the contentional sense, and wears well with very casual stuff. as good over a tracksuit as anything

Yooo I been thinking I need a tracksuit for it hahaha Big safety pin is a good idea though I might have to steal that one 🤔
