provide the whole log upload the .log file or let discord convert it to a message.txt upload

Okay, just so you know I'm switching back and forth between my Deck and mobile to provide my issue so just a moment
CommandMC
CommandMC15mo ago
^^ Also make sure to not switch between Proton and Wine for your Wine version, as those have a different prefix structure (so your save will only be accessible in one of them)

you can upload the log via Discord on the Deck copy, paste, acknowledge the text is too large and upload as file

STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default
That looks abnormal

if you deleted this directory
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default
then your save is gone. it's recommended that you don't use the same "default" path for all your games, and instead do something like this
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/God of War
if you didn't delete the prefix directory, then the save will still be present

"name": "Proton - Proton - Experimental",
"winePrefix": "/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default",
"location": "/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/pfx/dosdevices/c:/users/steamuser/Saved Games/God of War/3203383023"

Does "Reset Heroic" delete that directory?
stormy-gold
stormy-gold15mo ago
the first 2 need to be changed and the 3rd needs to be verified
wise-white
wise-whiteOP15mo ago
Changed to what? And how do I verify that directory? Oh I see the 2nd one needs to be changed to "God of War", what about the first?

Wine-GE-latest if your saves are coming in from the cloud and you didn't upload a blank file up, you won't need to do anything with the 3rd you will need to delete the folder path though

wise-whiteOP15mo ago
I do not have cloud saves enabled I'm not sure if it was actually deleted. Created and modified date don't seem to suggest that. Did I change the save location somehow?

itchy-amethyst15mo ago
maybe, but does this path exist?
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/pfx/dosdevices/c:/users/steamuser/Saved Games/God of War/3203383023
if not, does this path exist?
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/God of War/pfx/dosdevices/c:/users/steamuser/Saved Games/God of War/3203383023
wise-white
wise-whiteOP15mo ago
both those directories exist
itchy-amethyst
itchy-amethyst15mo ago
then it seems that the prefix was moved from
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/God of War
to
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/

wise-whiteOP15mo ago
What is a prefix?
itchy-amethyst
itchy-amethyst15mo ago
in the game's settings the prefix is created to help interface with the game, it's creating the file structure that is expected to be there when the game launches, including save data
No description

that screenshot is from the game's settings
wise-white
wise-whiteOP15mo ago
okay, so which prefix is my system using? oh
itchy-amethyst
itchy-amethyst15mo ago
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/
wise-white
wise-whiteOP15mo ago
sorry
itchy-amethyst
itchy-amethyst15mo ago
no worries change it to
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/God of War
wise-white
wise-whiteOP15mo ago
Do I have to do that for every game?
itchy-amethyst
itchy-amethyst15mo ago
do you need to change it for every game? no probably not
wise-white
wise-whiteOP15mo ago
Did "Reset Heroic" cause this?
itchy-amethyst
itchy-amethyst15mo ago
i don't know exactly what "reset heroic" does, i'll have to look at the code
stormy-gold
stormy-gold15mo ago
you should never use the "use default wine settings" checkbox when installing games. if you do not use that checkbox, it'll automatically name your prefix folders per-game

Yes (one of the many things this PR aims to fix)

itchy-amethyst15mo ago
i just found the code, it does indeed as yet another testament lol

Fixed, I restored all lost save files, thank you all!
itchy-amethyst
itchy-amethyst15mo ago
last thing, in future stick mainly with wine-ge from heroic's wine manager. that will give the best logs if you need help, and has the higher compatability of the two with more games

for future reference, you cant actually change where a game puts its save files unless the game itself provides a mechanism for it. This is generally determined by the game developers, and the platform (egs, steam, etc) requirements, something out of control of heroic or the user. The save location in heroic's cloud save settings is simply where heroic will place saves it downloads from the cloud.. usually heroic knows where to place cloud saves without any configuration
