High School Prom Advice
I've got prom upcoming in late may. A couple of my friends got really dark suits and one guy even wants to have a tux đź’€. I think that's a bit too formal, so I just want to pair together chinos (i guess?) together with a blazer.
Any color/pattern/whatever else combinations you would reccomend?

well i definitely agree prom is probably too formal for a tux (and depending on what kind of afterpartying you're doing, the place he might be renting it from might hate him for it too lmao). tbh trying to match with your date would be really cute, and a nice way to show you care about them i need to not assume
Are you in the US? Tuxes and suits for proms are standard, I wouldn't wear chinos to one
can say anecdotally i wore a suit in basically all black/charcoal for my senior prom last year (with an accessory matching my date's dress) and it worked out fine for me and was about average as far as the formality of suits, so I wouldn't say it's 'too formal'
if you're worried about looking stuffy, there are lots of ways to look fun and casual in a suit
I'm not from the US, and I've never heard of a suit being rented
I don't have a date so I don't have to worry about that
how formal would you say a 'normal' look at your school's prom is?
I've got no idea. I haven't been to last year's one
suits aren't out of the question tho, no. i'm just used to hearing about wild afterparties and wearing a tuxedo sounds like a fast-track to getting it messed up bad
Yeah suits are fine
I'll say that around where I am, a suit is the norm, but a full tux is excessive unless you're changing for the afterparty, and most people lean fun/casual with their suits as opposed to black tie type stuff
and i feel like in my experience that's the standard more generally
I don't want to blend in though, since everybody is probably going to wear very dark colors
And most guys are pretty similar in height and build
then maybe do a suit that's in a brighter/more vibrant color palette?
in my estimation, you would probably stand out as underdressed if you showed up to an event full of suits in chinos, which i dont think is the kind of standing out you're going for
yeah that makes sense
what would you recommend?
tan? olive?
I am white so very light colors would probably wash me out
Honestly this is when I suggest renting a tux
Wearing a tux to Prom is standard in the US and I suggest renting one even if you’re not getting “wild”
i think here I'd advise you to go look at some suit looks that you like in different colors and maybe compile a few of them
think about what you'd want to wear/ how you'd feel in them
look at what types of lapel, shoulder, and other detail you'd want
I've never heard of anyone renting any piece of cothing where I'm from tho
And I think it's a bit much
would patterns also be good or would i overdo it?
also, there's a wealth of information in suiting in the #fashion-guides channel (which is a compendium of links)
Interesting. Literally everyone I went to Prom with rented a tux. But if that’s not common then yeah a suit would be fine. It’s a formal event technically, so chinos seem too relaxed imo
the formalwear section is at the top of the channel
for a lot of general ideas (are patterns good? how to mix them? do I want a pattern?) the guides can be very helpful
I've read it but it only talks about black/dark grey/navy and that's not really what I want
ok I haven't read the ones about shirts, will do
if you have any questions feel free to ask
I will, but what do you mean by compile?
just make a folder/camera roll album/ pinterest board of the looks you like so that you have a few different reference points
ok so find them on the internet so I have a reference point? it doesnt include me taking pictures of myself in the mirror haha
i think at this point you're still just collecting inspiration yeah
not buying stuff/trying stuff on yet
ok i get it now, i'll come back when i get some ideas
hopefully the things that I like will be available here hah
yeah- I'd advise you to make a new thread when you do come back and ask that, because now you're dealing with a whole separate set of questions (would i want to wear this to prom? what's the best out of these options? how do i find something that looks like this available for me to buy, and in the right price range?) that probably deserve their own thread
good luck with your searching!
alright, thank you!
