Does collar gap matter in dress shirt if you don't button the top button
I prefer not to wear a tie anyways. I think collar gap matters if you wear a tie but if you leave the top button or two unbottoned does it matter if your shirt neck size is larger than usual? Trying to find shirts that fit in the chest as my priority

I think you are misunderstanding what collar gap is. Collar gap is a gap between your jacket collar/lapels and the collar of your dress shirt.
Which looks sloppy as it means the jacket doesn't fit right
As for what you are asking (wearing too big a shirt in the neck) I would admittedly be surprised if your neck size is smaller than the matched chest size, but as with anything it depends on the outfit. It's likely fine in your case.
thanks for the clarification. so usually I wear a 16 or 16.5" neck size, 16 is a bit tight tho so 16.5" is better, but shirts in the 17", 17.5" range fit better elsewhere. I also have a long hairstyle so it would probably cover any gap between my neck and shirt collar. Regardless it's not a big deal if you aren't wearing a tie and leave the top button unbuttoned right?
what shirts are you buying specifically?
I would suggest buying a size 16.5 shirt in a relaxed fit so they fit more like other shirts in size 17"/17.5" ... just so you have the option of wearing a tie
however if you literally never plan on wearing a tie then yeah sizing up on the neck is probably fine (though pics would help)
dress shirts, and yea I buy 16.5 in classic/relaxed fit already haha
probably tmi but my nipples tend to protrude and imo it's a bad look so I'm looking for a bigger chest circumference
I mean what brand, what model shirt
it varies, I get most of my dress shirts from thrifting, but like Charles Thrywitt classic fit usually is what I find
others are from David Donohue, brooks brothers, etc
I find most of the poly/wicking undershirts don't help with nipples but thicker options like cotton ribbed tanks work better for me
I am completely unable to find off the rack to fit me because i have a smaller neck size compared to my body, but proper cloth sorted me out with their custom sizing
(not affililated etc etc)
Generally, I think a half inch or so in variance is fine. maybe an inch depending on the collar height, shape, and the rest of the outfit. Any smaller and you usually notice it starting to press back against your chest with a few wrinkles. Any larger and it gives mobster vibes imo.
If CT's classic fit doesn't work for you, maybe try Brooks Brothers or Spier? They may have a wider fit. There's also always MTM but if course it's more expensive.
