We have 7 people at this point who indicate they will protest. Date is set for April 16. We would like to have as many groups visible as possible. I have not reached out PauseAI directly, except here in the forum in my posts, but would love to have an official PauseAI presence. I am sorry, by the way for not reaching out directly, but organizing is not my thing.

Like to see others pick up the ball. But at this point, there will be a protest on the 16th at OpenAI. Fall back date is the 17th if weather forces. Fall back target is Anthropic.
Any advice?

I'd suggest going for Anthropic, because that is a bit more newsworthy and fitting since they are leading the capabilities race now. They stabbed the AI safety community in the back by doing so - plenty of people are pissed.

Hi Joep, We are in the process of organizing a group we call the "World Pause Coalition." Jon Dodd is the president and would be our main point man on this. We would really like to have your help on all the things you mentioned. Jon will be on the road tomorrow and fairly busy for the next week, so I will try to back him up to degree. I don't know how useful this may be, but we have the ability to print poster size signs and would be happy to do so at no cost for everyone involved in this protest. All we need is your PDF and instructions on how many. I think it would be a big plus if we had 3 or more groups all working together in the protest, each with their own signs. Also I am volunteering to print individual signs if people who are attending send a PDF of the sign they want.

We don't have a permit, so in my understanding that limits the size our gathering. I would really like to know if that is true. At first that didn't seem like a problem, but there seems to be quite a lot of interest in this right now.

We would appreciate help in writing a press release very much. I see Anthropic as being traitors to their founding principles who deserve to be protested just as much as OpenAI. I think we should have a protest there, perhaps second, or perhaps as fallback if something went wrong at OpenAI. The reason I suggest OpenAI as the first target is they are better known among average Americans who are not following AI closely.

The group I will be with is called "World Pause Coalition" but the more groups there the better it seems to me. Need as many individuals as possible of course. I would be fine with you adding me to the chat group you mentioned.
Our main goal is to see a hard pause worldwide. But I would like to put a positive spin on it. So some of signs might read "Pause AI Worldwide" but also something like "Pause Now And Keep The Benefits Of AI Without The Risks Of Super Intelligent AI." I know that is too long though.

I think as many individual signs as possible are good thing. If anyone has a special interest in labor, environmental and artists’ rights, I think it would a very good thing for them to have signs connecting AI to the damage it will do to those interests. I (the church group backing us, really) am volunteering to print signs for anyone in the protest as long as they are not obscene.

Do you have an event page yet for the protest with date, time, location, and rsvp capability? If you do then I can share the event page link with the SF group chat I mentioned and introduce you to the group. If you don't have an event page made yet then I suggest you make one real quick with Facebook (I can help make an event page if needed). Any event page site will work as long as there is both a "going" AND "interested" button for people to rsvp. If there is just a "going" button, then there is less turnout because people don't like to commit right away. They like to see lots of other people who are "interested" before they decide to go themselves.

You don't need a permit to protest on public sidewalks in front of businesses. I confirmed this for our last protest and just called the mission precinct. I just spoke with officer ortiz badge #1029 and he said you don't need a permit if your arent: blocking a street, blocking an entrance, or blocking a sidewalk. He said you can have 100+ people protesting on a sidewalk in front of a buisness WITHOUT A PERMIT if you provide a pathway for employees and pedestrians to come and go and aren't blocking the adjacent street.

Yes, we would love to coordinate with Holly Elmore and anyone else. Second week of May sounds good for our second protest. Our strategy is to try to get as many smaller protests off in as short as time as possible to build momentum for larger protests in the summer. We want to go with the April 16th protest, but a follow up protest in May would be perfect.

Thanks for the offer to help. I would appreciate your help on the press release draft, also the list of journalists. We will try to get it off either Friday or Monday. You probably have a pretty good idea where we are coming from: Pause AI right now. Besides that message, we want to try to show, somehow, that we don't need AGI to reap many benefits from existing AI. We are not Luddites. We understand that there are good things about AI. But we also understand that moving to AGI will be very dangerous. It is something that we all need to think about. It should not be up to just a few top people in the AI development industry. I hoping for as long a protest as possible on the 16th. It would give people time to come by for an hour or two, maybe, after work or whatever.

Hi Holly. We want to get as many protests going as possible, so we would like to do both.

I would like to work with you on the May event. I will personally plan to be there with a few World Pause Coalition people. We would like to do whatever else we can do to support the event as well. If you can encourage anyone to attend the April 16 protest, we would be grateful. It seems to me that the more organizations we have supporting us the more credibility the Pause idea will have. The real mother lode of activists will be in the environmental and labor movements, but if the urgency of pausing were to catch on with some social justice activists, they would lend tremendous energy to the movement. I am mentioning this in the hope that you or anyone else may have a few contacts in those groups.

It definitely will be! The event in question got pushed back to June to make room for the pre-Seoul protests, so it might be a bit before it's ready to share.

I got in to town just in time to make this protest- it was freaking amazing! These people drove over 1800 miles, hot seating over 2 days to get out to OpenAI & were out there for over 6 hours, handing out flyers, engaging with passerby's and OpenAI employees and security guards. I had the most amazing conversations with everyone and made some friends for life- the conviction, determination, and graciousness and joy of Jon, Trevor, Collette, Julia, Abrunette, Jean & Terah was overwhelming and really humbling.
