Transitions/Animations - Where to start, and what to avoid?

Looking for info on how to start using transitions/animations - the only ones I'm aware of and have used are the basics from Svelte transition: in/out, fade, fly etc...

I'm wanting to learn this through Vanilla JS if possible, but also React
