Legal strategy with expert campaigning lawyers 'Foxglove'
This project hopes to slow AGI developers down through developing a partnership with a campaigning legal team with expertise in challenging Big Tech. This would buy time for AI researchers and legal action would generate massive media attention, raising awareness of the Pause.AI cause.
Foxglove is a UK non-profit that holds big tech and governments alike to account through litigation. They forced disclosure of secret contracts between tech giants and government, known as the ‘NHS Covid-19 data deals’. They stopped the UK government’s racist visa-streaming algorithm, helped make grading fair for every student in the UK by challenging OfQual’s algorithm and have brought three human rights cases in Kenya fighting for the human rights of Facebook content moderators.
Foxglove is likely to have relationships with AI ethicists, and therefore may be exposed to the smear campaign which is circulating about EA and AI safety among some in that field. For that reason, I think good diplomatic skills and a legal background would greatly help this project.
